Let's say pigs fly and the 4 main alphabets all agree that having multiple champions is killing boxing. So they decide to put all their titleholders, including interim, super and regular, into tournaments to get a main man in each division. Mainly, I've just gone with WBC v WBO, IBF v WBA with the winners to fight in a final. However, having just 4 champions per division isn't enough for these sanctioning bodies and there are numerous interim and super champions so I've tried my best to make the match ups work. Fights a) and b) are your semis with the other fights being 'qualifiers'. Ultimately, the winners of fights a) and b) meet each other in a final. Wlad and Montiel have being given byes due to being unified and their being only two other title holders and yes there are some stupid fights like Sartison-Ward but that's just how it is. And if you think Vitali beats Haye lets just assume that the Klits agree to fight each other. Now I'd like you lot to pick these fights and decide who comes out on top in each division. Now I know that there's probably only a few posters on this forum (and I'm definitely not one of them!) who knows about each and every fighter mentioned below. If you don't know enough about a fighter/division, just ignore them and pick the fights you do know enough about. You can give breakdowns of fights or just final picks, it's up to you. And if that's not enough, pit the winner of each little tourney against the best fighter in that weight class who's not 'participating'. For example, Manny would stroll through the Welterweight tourney but his biggest challenger, Floyd Mayweather, is not in the tourney. How would that go? :hey Let's not get involved in the politics of the sport and just assume each fight does take place. a)Vitali Klitschko-David Haye b)Wladimir Klitschko a)Krystof Wlodarzcyk-Marco Huck Steve Cunningham-Troy Ross b)Winner of Cunningham/Ross-Guillermo Jones Jean Pascal-Chad Dawson a)Winner of Pascal/Dawson-Jurgen Braehmer b)Beibut Shumenov-Tavoris Cloud a)Mikkel Kessler-Robert Stieglitz Andre Ward-Dmitri Sartison b)Winner of Ward/Sartison-Lucian Bute a)Sergio Martinez-Sebastian Zbik b)Felix Sturm-Sebastian Sylvester II Yuri Foreman-Nobuhiro Ishido a)Winner of Foreman/Ishido-Corry Spinks Sergei Dzinziruk-Alfredo Angulo b)Winner of Dzinziruk-Angulo/Sergio Martinez a)Andre Berto-Manny Pacquiao Vyacheslav Senchenko-Souleymane M'Baye b)Winner of Senchenko/M'Baye-Jan Zaveck a)Amir Khan-Marcos Maidana b)Devon Alexander-Tim Bradley a)Humberto Soto-Miguel Acosta b)Juan Manuel Marquez-Michael Katsidis a)Vitali Tajbert-Roman Martinez b)Takashi Uchiyama-Jorge Solis a)Elio Rojas-Juan Manuel Lopez Yuriorkis Gamboa-Chris John b)Winner of Gamboa/John-Orlando Salido a)Toshiaki Nishioka-Wilfredo Vazquez Jr b)Poonsawat Kratindaengym-Steve Molitor a)Anselmo Moreno-Yonnhy Perez b)Fernando Montiel Jorge Arce-Omar Narvaez Hugo Cazares-Nonito Donaire a)Winner of Arce/Narvaez-Vic Darchinyan b)Winner of Cazares/Donaire-Simphiwe Nongqayi Daiki Kameda-Luis Concepcion Julio Cesar Miranda-Richie Mepranum a)Winner of Kameda/Concepcion-Moruti Mthalane b)Winner of Miranda/Mepranum-Pongsaklek Wonjongkam Ivan Calderon-Johnriel Casimiro Giovanni Segura-Juan Carlos Reveco a)Winner of Calderon/Casimiro-Rodel Mayol b)Winner of Segura/Reveco-Luis Lazarte a)Oleydong Sithsanerchai-Donnie Nietes b)Roman Gonzalez-Nkosinathi Joyi
What if Wlad and Vitali both win? They ain't gonna fight each other? It's a serious mess. I see what you're saying Ishy though, I'd propose some kind of elimination tournament like the one to find Tunneys successor.
Here's what I've done (probably similar to what you did). I simply looked up the 4 champions (WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO) for each division and chose the one who I reckon would be the ultimate champion Heavy: Wladimir Klitschko (technically superior, high workrate, lethal jab) Cruiser: Huck (a bit sloppy, but lots of heart, decent workrate) Light-Heavy: Pascal (but to be fair, I haven't seen many fights at LHW) SMW: Ward (beat Kessler, and considerably better than Bute and Stieglitz) MW: Martinez (got unlucky against PW, decent win against Pavlik) LMW: - (no idea) Welter: Pacquiao (obvious choice) Light-welter: Alexander (Bradley lacks the KO power, Khan hasn't fought the same level of opposition) Light: Marquez (past his prime, but still a technical master, shouldn't be fighting at higher divisions) I admit I'm quite ignorant about the lighter divisions, so I won't include them.
