What are the chances of Soto appealing the result of the fight? Has a fighter ever succeeded in getting a referee's decision overturned in an appeal?
He has no chance whatsoever. At least he shouldn't. I'm not saying it wasn't a bad call, but once a commission overturns a single verdict then it leads to endless second guessing of officials. Besides, Cortez based his verdict on the rules, and even though the severity of Soto's violation of those rules is questionable, the fact remains that he did hit Lorenzo while on the canvas.
He could try, but honestly, when was the last time you heard of a fight being overturned? In my opinion he has about zero chance of overturning the ref's decision. It just doesn't happen much in boxing.
It was Cortez fault for all the confusion. He pulled them apart for no reason right before the accidental hit.
It's happened, but I doubt it will happen here, since Cortez conferred with the commissioner and the commissioner screwed up as well. The commish would look horrible if he said one thing to HBO, then went back and reviewed the tapes and changed his mind. On the other hand, I suspect he'll be able to petition the WBC for another title shot and he'll probably get that. As I mentioned in another thread, the WBC officially declined to give Lorenzo the belt, so it's still vacant (or will be as soon as Pac officially vacates).
Nil chances bud. In as much as it's not pretty and very much controvertial . . . the representatives of the commision are the ones who made the decission right there on the spot. Points: One . . . all proffesional boxers knew very well that hitting an opponent while any part of the gloves or the knee is already touching the canvas is a ground for disqualification or point deduction. So Soto has no excuse for that, even if Lorenzo did that intentionally. Two . . . if the ref moved decisively to stop the action immediately to start a count or promounce a winner when Lorenzo kneeled down it couldn't have happened. So the best thing that could happen is an order for an immediate rematch and sack the ref for incompetence.
I think it was last year, Terrence Cauthen and Raul Frank fought in a IBF Eliminator... Cauthen was winning the fight, but he was ko'd by a headbutt... the ref didnt see and thought it was a punch so he ruled it a TKO...... But it was overturned to a No Contest... Cauthen's people tried to make it a win for him cause he was up on all the cards but he just got that... This has a good chance of being overturned as well..
