Hey, I had a question about something I couldn't really find advice about anywhere.. so I'd figure I'd ask the poople that seem to know best(these forums so far). Today, I was doing some heavy bag work when I stopped because jabbing with my left hand feels so unnatural, as does crossing with my right. When I switched stances(southpaw), it immediately feels a bit more relaxing and natural for me and I can really torque my hips and legs into every punch. So my question is.. I'm normally right handed, should I stick to what is orthodox or what feels the most natural? Whats the advantages and disadvantages to boxing southpaw? Anything else I should be concerned about with the differences in style? I also assumed it felt the most natural to me because even when I was in the Army, I shoot left handed because I'm left eye dominant.
Unfortunately, I'm unable to pay for a coach or get to the one closest to me. I used to box on and off when I was 16, then a little more while I was in the Army at 18. I'm 22 now and want to become a competitor(starting amateur first). Most of my experience is first hand with small bits of coaching from time to time. Would love to find a coach down here in FL that would like to train a high energy person that wants to live the boxing lifestyle and has an appreciation for all the arts in Boxing
Id say get to a gym, look on the internet or ask around your local area if theres one about. It depends on how long you have been boxing for and how constantly. For example at first it felt unnatrual for me boxing otherdox, however i eventualy got use to it now it feels unnatrual to be southpaw. I would say stick with orthadox and train with it, if still feel wierd( talking months) then switch back and see if you feel same way.:thumbsup
