BS... ee FIGHTERS WERE STILL IN VERY SMALL NUMBERS IN PRO IN EARLY 90-TIES. Golota and Mavrovic were a exception cus he went to america..there were no promotion companies and no infrastructure in EE,things has changed still Golota destroyed Bowe and Mavrovic who was nobody in EE did give hell of the fight to Lennox... future of heavy and cruise and super middle belong to EE....better get use to it
The depth of American boxers pales in comparison to what it used to. They had high school boxing up into the 60's maybe 70's at every high in my city. I live in a city in California of about 350,000 people and have lived all over the state and gyms were scarce. Most of the Boxers were Mexican nationals. American kids just don't box anymore.
Its too bad Alexey Lezin from Russia never went pro. He does hold the distinction of beating both Wlad and Vitali in the amateurs.

To say the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard wouldn't have made it is stupid and obviously not true. Ray Leonard was an olympic gold medalist, so there is no reason to assume that the eastern euro amateurs would be better. However, why would you assume that other olympic medalists would not have made it just because they are from eastern europe? Jerzy Kulej was a two time olympic gold medalist, is it stupid to think he could have been a top pro? Or Aleksandr Miroshnichenko, he knocked Bowe down twice in the olympics, maybe he could have been a good pro. Ion Alexe was described by foreman as the hardest hitter he ever faced, maybe he could have been a top ten pro. If the eastern euro are winning most of the medals in olympics and world championships in a time before headguards in the ams, why would you assume they would not have been good pros?
they are lucky that the superior and slick american black athletes are playing other sports. remember this, the klit sisters would had been low-level journeymen in the 70's.
This is a great thread. Important to note that Oleg Maskaev had TERRIBLE management, and still managed to win a title. In the lower weight classes, there have been many Eastern Euros making noise: sergei dzinziruk, Dmitry Pirog and Tomasz Adamek to name three champions. Promoting Eastern Euro or Russian boxers takes MONEY to pay opponents and to rent a venue when NO ONE has heard of these guys.
