iv been boxing for a year or so and always been happy with my improvement and skill haven't had any fights because my gym trainer tends to focus on his pro's so i went to this knew gym and the guy asked me to spar with this guy that was around 65kg (i am 54) so i was a fair bit lighter than him i got through the first round but his reach and power got the better of me then in the second round he hit me into a corner and hit me with huge straight and popped my nose the trainer ended it and now i am scared of sparring it has knocked my confidence a fair bit
Here's the thing mate, how many people walk through the doors of a gym every day? A trainer doesn't have time to waste with new faces who have no genuine interest. You got put in the ring to test your resolve. Go back to the gym, train, spar, do whatever he asks. It's boxing remember, you're going to take ass whoopings occasionally. If this rolls on for a month or whatever tell your coach you're struggling with the weight difference and you'd prefer to fight someone more your size, but as for now, just get in the ring again, keep the hands up and prove you want to actually be there.
Because it was a new gym chance are they were testing your personality, they were seeing how you'd react to a) going in with a bigger guy, b) getting beat on and c) how you reacted to being hit with a good shot sounds like you passed the first two ok. Your best bet is to go back and be ready to spar again when asked chances are theyll put you in with someone your size from now on. It's all part of character building
Hey mate, If it was a good club and a good trainer then you should of never been put in that situation until you were a 100% confident in what you were doing and mentally prepared. A good club will of started you off with some jab exchanges at the most! at least until you were comfortable catching/slipping punches coming towards you and then gradually worked in hooks, body shots, right hands etc etc. Then when you feel comfortable catching and returning punches from various angles its time to start upping the intensity. Sure If your getting more serious then you will always need a gut check to see if you have what its made of to step into the ring. The majority of the time sparring should be used for working on your technique & stuff your bad at so in this instance the other dude should probably of relaxed and worked on footwork, distance & catching your punches. Its also why people shouldn't read to much into sparing as a good confident boxer doesn't always spar to win. I boxed when I was in school and felt like I got put into a very similar position you just described, I felt helpless and didn't really have a clue what was happening. I simply got hit a lot and never went back. 10 years later I went to a boxing club with a friend and it was a bit of a defeating a fear type of situation. I was shown and learned all the proper techniques; stance, movement, jabs, slipping, catching and then was introduced to sparring slowly and controlled. I have now had a good few gut checks in sparring and have had 2 white collar fights but I was ready. You may want to join a good club but you also might want to invest in some lessons. Not sure how it works where you are or what you have been paying but nobody will spend time training you if you just pay the monthly gym membership.
Sorry, I read that like it may of been your first time sparring but reading it again it probably wasn't. You got a bit hurt, It happens every so often if you spar a lot. Go back in and work on your technique, ask the coach what went wrong and how you can improve it and like I said above pay him for a private lesson or a bit of tuition.
Hi mate, Firstly you've been let down by your trainer and then by the gym you went into to spar. Like anything in any sport injuries can knock confidence and will to go back in there. You didn't do anything wrong you was just over matched physically and it's a learning curve. Don't allow stupidity from that gym to get in the way of your enjoyment you obviously loved the spar and was happy to spar and knew what consequences were. Like true champions get yourself back in there, Learn from whatever mistakes you may of made. I always say the more you think and worry about something the harder it gets and in reality it wasn't ever as bad as you thought it would be so get in a gym that will take care of you and give you the time you've earned and deserve and work on your defence only kidding. If you really don't want to go back in there don't do it. All i'd add is don't fear the punches coming or close eyes now cos of whats happened. If you're going to get hit you'd rather see it coming then not which is obviously more dangerous. Good luck and Godbless mate :good.
The gym is a joke if they are throwing you in at the deep end without knowing anything about you. Folk can say they are "testing" you, but they've taken risks with your health, they haven't given a **** about you, so what does that ell you about he type of people they are? However, your boxing, you're going to get hurt its part of the game, you wouldn't go swimming and complain about getting wet. Get back in as soon as possible or it will become a bigger issue.
Well being 54kg you are always going to be up againts but an experienced 65kg boxer shouldnt really be loading up on someone that smaller. New gyms sometimes do test your resolve a bit in sparring but usally more by keeping you in the ring and getting fresh people in for a few rounds. The bottom line is though mate boxing is one of the toughest sports in the world and you are going to get hit so you got to get use to it.
First off all you've shown balls coming on here sayin your scared to spar takes a man to admit that and secondly you was up for getting in with a heavier guy you new nothing about in a new gym that shows deep down you got some grit ok you took a hiding and got pulled out no crime stick at it and go in with your original confidence
Your not scared mate or you wouldn't do it in the first place, speak to the coach and explain you'd rather spar guys your own level and weight
You shouldn't be sparring someone 11kg heavier than you. Especially being a relative novice in terms of never fought!! Really although the trainer and gym may be wrong. It is really down to you. You could of say no at anytime and said he is too big.. I agree with Billy if you were scared you would not of went in the ring in the first place.. But what I would say is there is no way Billy would let Ricky spar with someone 75-78kgs and Ricky is a world class fighter.. Boxing gyms are notorious for testing resolve of fighters and sometimes pushing it a bit far!! It's not character building to put a novice in with an experience guy 11 kg heavier.. Ask about the area you are in. Find a trainer who will work with you and although push you will also make sure that you are safe
