It seems like he is stepping you back a lot when he punches. Try to stand your ground more. Do you work a lot on in-fighting? Also, go to the body more, Head moves, body stays. However, listen to your trainer first and foremost. Most will critique how they were trained. I like inside fighting and rarely step back. Your trainer may have different ideas. Just my .02. I am assuming that you are the orthodox boxer...The next time you spar this guy, I would try two things. First, you are taller and have a longer reach. Start your jab, feint, what ever it takes to make him jab, then jab over the top of his right hand as you pivot to your left. This will take you out of range of his left hand, and give you a nice angle to land your right hand, as I'm pretty sure he'll turn and follow you. Second, stay in front of him, shading to your right, and every time he throws a left hand, crank your left hook. He is a pretty square-up fighter, and, sometimes when he throws that left, he brings his left foot up and gets real square. Then he is especially open to the left hook off his left hand, but you should hit him with it pretty much at will. Throw a nice tight short hook and he'll walk right into it. Come back with a right uppercut to the body. Also, the motion of throwing your hook will get you out of the way off his left hand; it should go over your left shoulder.
