obvi youve been around pros and their camps, i thought it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on that recent vid of james kirkland in sparring. a lot of people find it wrong that he beats on his sparring partner like that. what you reckon of the vid
Depends on what the purpose of the sparring is. If I have an amateur kid I am trying to develop... 9 out of 10 times I put him in the ring with a seasoned pro. The reasoning behind this is that a pro will have the ability to push the amateur to the absolute limit of his ability without turning it into a real fight, but at the same time the pro has the ability to keep the amateur in check by taking advantage of his mistakes. It also gives the pro a chance to work on things he might not feel comfortable working on with someone that was at an equal level. As for our pros... I believe in very hard sparring, and I also support sparring more rounds then the actual fight is going to be. if a guy is fighting 4 rounds he is sparring 6. Rest periods are never more then 30 seconds, and rounds are often 4 minutes. At the peak of train my boxers will spar the entire length of there proposed fight str8 through... no rest period. I feel that what a fighter goes through in the gym should be much harder then what a fight could be so that the fight is easier. I don't want them to encounter something in a fight that they haven't already encountered in the gym. The gym is where my fighters learn how to deal with adversity... never do they learn something new in the actual fight... not if I can help it. As for James Kirkland and Manne Wolfe... they strike me as bullies, and that's what I see happening in her gym. I see her training bullies, and that is something I despise. The footage of Kirkland sparring was a sad representation of boxing. I would never allowing an advanced fighter in my gym to take advantage of a fighter of lesser ability. If I had pro like Kirkland sparring a lesser talent and he hurt the guy I would immediately tell him to touch up the body until the guy got his sense back. The fact of the matter is the pros in my gym would never conduct themselves like that because my pros are professional in every sense of the word. Now if I have to guys in the gym of equal ability and experience... then it is time to go to war. If you go down you go down... better you learn to deal with it in the gym. it's not something you want to experience for the first time in an actual fight.
There was one where Galota started hitting Tua low in sparring, so Tua started firing back. Both of them going blow for blow trading punches to the groin.
