Just lookng for some advice off some of the more experienced guys on here. I've been boxing off and on for 15 years or so. I'm 32 now and still do a bit of sparring every now and then.

I tend to do ok against guys who's style is to box rather than brawl. I've always struggled in sparring (and in my few amatuer fights) against guys who have very agressive styles and tend to throw punches in flurries.

A new guy has started at my gym and technically he's pretty crude, but he's extremely fast (feet and hands), fit, strong and has reasonble power. You know those guys who are not technically right but they're natural fighters? He's very agressive but rather than a come forward fighter he tends to wait then counter with fast and kinda off balance 5 and 7 punch combos and then move off. He's a very busy fighter. He keeps getting the better of me in sparring. Anyone got any good tips? Lots of feints and jabs perhaps?

yeh, you need lots of feints to get him throwing his flurries at you then step back and counter also try making him fall short and countering over the top

you say hes pretty quick so put your gloves up and walk into him with head movement and get him on the ropes and bang his body to slow him down

remember use the jab against someone like that to keep him off balance so his flurries wont have power

Like he said, work with your jab and try some feints and make him come to you - then counter him. You could try to double off your attacks when you counter.

If hes faster than you I would say just work on keeping distance between you two. Use the jab and such to make it happen and dont ever step straight back, step to the side.

I sparred with a guy like that who just kept coming forward and catching me with pretty hard shots for two rounds. I was trying to box but he just kept coming forward throwing punches in 4s and 5s getting through with a few. In the 3rd round, instead of trying to go forward with the jab like I was in the first 2, I just stepped to my left and used the left hook as he charged in. After being caught with 2 or 3 he started to think about it and was a little bit more weary about charging in and thats when I started to use my jab and start boxing again.

    Ruiz him.
Throw a jab, fall on to him and clutch so he can't counter. Then repeat this until he is lulled into boredom;then, unleash a sneaky right hand to finish the job.

Thanks guys, some sound advice there.

Ruiz him....haha. You're right, It would probably work but holding in sparring is the pussies way out, although in a fight it can make a lot of sense. Though I guess you have to learn to clinch effectively somewhere.

post a video to see. but from what it sounds like a pressure counterer. try some feints or jabs to see his reactions and take it slow. your probably gonna need to spar with him a few times before you understand his fighting method.

if they just throw a lot of flurries w/ nothing behind them, **** back and swing for the fences. i know of 2 ppl around here that were like that. they would just rush in throw punches w/ nothing behind them, no style or nething, just throwing punches fast. if u lean back and go w/ an uppercut would probably put them back. after they feel the power they rn't going to want to keep coming in like that. that is if all they're doing is throwing quick punches w/ no head movement or nething like that.

    jab, cross, left uppercut

they cant get out the way of it if they are a straight walking fighter. jab makes them slip or catches them, the right wacks the gaurd or chin out of position then the ledt uppercut goes thru the guard. if you do catch him and you have quick enough hands end it with a rigth cross. similar to adrian stone vs shane mosley. right hand, left uppercut, right cross.

or if he does have a bit of resistance and solid enough defnece just throw 1-2, uppercut and clinch...it takes all the inertia and momentum away from him and makes you land nothing.

playign bull to the matador is a good way. keep moving to your right flickign a snapping jab. when he tries to leap in with a lef thook just keep moving and throw a ritgh cross.

good call by JM. if sombody is throwing but not hurtign then you have no excuse to throw bombs...but i warn you osm eguy sthrow alot of these powder puff shots only to keep you covered and as soon as you comeback with anythign they'll land a strong left hook. think clazaghe in a way.

on the other hand there was this decent sized welter in the gym from southlondon. had all the skills and atheleticism. looked great when shadow boxing. but in sparring the guy didnt commit to any punch at all. used a soft jab and soft combinations. thinking that he was just playing for sparring sake (just looking to practice technique not really get into a fight) my coach told brian (are stocky kid lightwieght) to try and throw an overhand after he jabs...for 3 rounds of sparring a near novice is outgunning and near obliterating this slickster.this south london bruv couldnt comeback with anything.

thign about boxing is that it is a figth but yoru there to figth cleanly and smratly...that doesnt mean jabbing moving and runnign isnt fighting it just doesnt win you the rounds.

    good call my man

Yeah I'm not gonna do that. There are some great members on this board with good experience and good advice but, no offence, there are also a lot of douches with no idea. From my experience with boxing over the years everyone has an opinion on what you're doing right and particularly what you're doing wrong in sparring and they're not shy about letting you know even if they're no expert. So I'd prefer just to get some general tips and advice which I can then assess to see what i think sounds workable rather than have people go over a video and say what they think I should and shouldn't have done in every instant.

Thanks for the input guys, some solid advice there.
