On the back of some Joshua-Dubois discussions we were trying to think of some famous 'Sparring Partners turned Rivals' stories where the pair eventually fought in the pro ranks..

And whether these kind of narratives, like Tank vs Frank, have always been around - or just become more prevalent in recent years!

Chavez and De La Hoya sparred when he was an amatuer, then they ended up fighting 4 years later for the WBC 140 pound title. Vargas and Campas also.

Holmes was one of Ali’s sparring partners.

Not a famous one, but before their recent fight a lot was said about Dubois sparring Hrgovic.
By all accounts, Hrgovic got the better of Dubois. Didn´t quite go so well in the actual fight.

If only Dubois had thought to repeatedly headbutt Hrgovic during sparring.

Chavez vs Ramirez. They were close socially as well, if I remember correctly. Been a while.

It´s not the only reason he won. Hrgovic clearly lacked the conditioning and from all of the pre-fight media it was clear that he wasn´t taking Dubois seriously.

There are an abundance of names that can be mentioned, as the boxing community is a lot closer than outsiders know.

When you mention Frank and Tank....they were/are just peers who've sparred each other. Frank wasn't a regular sparring partner of Tanks. There are multiple individuals who have similar connections. Shakur fought Herring. Tyson fought Frazier. Ali fought Holmes. Those are names of the top of my head in which I know the fighters had sparred each other at least once before actually facing each other in the ring on the main stage.

Of course it's not the only reason but the fight was stopped on docs advise due to cuts partly due to Dubois sticking the head on him countless times. Dubois was clearly ahead and more in the fight but Hrgovic is ovrrated aswell let's not forget that.

:deal: I picked Dubois by KO and my breakdown of the fight was almost perfect.
Basically went exactly as I predicted.

They weren’t necessarily sparring partners I don’t think but before Inoue turned pro he sparred Taguchi and apparently dominated him and even knocked him down, the only time in Taguchi’s life he ever went down to my knowledge. Taguchi said that being so comprehensively dominated by a highschooler was the turning point in his career and it motivated him to train hard and get better.

Fury never sparred Wlad from what I remember

But AJ sparred both Wlad and Fury
