Sparring Stories

It seems that i've read at least a dozen wildly differing versions of this story. Other versions have Dempsey KO'ing Galento with a left hook.

File under: Fiction.

 

It was reported in the newspapers at the time, around 1936 I believe.
Of course that doesn't make it TRUE either. But the originally version was quite simply that Dempsey gave him a bit of a beating, no KO. It's believable.

 

James Toney sparred Vitali Klitshko and played with him , according to Pepper Roach

 

Tyson sparred Bruno and Lewis.

Holyfield Tua is on youtube, as is Duran and Benn.

Rqzor ruddock sparred Larry Holmes, that's on Youtube as well as Tyson and carl williams

 

I wouldn't doubt it for a second.

Vitali, IMHO, is so overrated it's comical. Stylistically, James is all wrong for him.

 

Oh, I believe it happened in some fashion. It's the various versions that come out, replete with Dempsey being "trim and tan as in his prime" bull****, just dris with the adolescent man love that has distorted the whole Dempsey legacy. Par for the course in regards to Dempsey reporting.

 

Fiction is Dempsey having the same skill set as Firpo.atsch

 

That was good reading the entire account of Dempsey-Galento, its the first time I've come across it. Great posting Grumpy!

I was referring to Dempsey at moments in the Firpo fight, running full steam across the ring and throwing hooks from way outside of range, squaring up, off balance, wide open… When he gets on track and finds his range, he's devastating. But his lapses really stick out.

 

I heard Friday ahunya knocked Tyson out in sparring, around the time of the Williams fight

 

I have no doubt if Toney could have got near Vitali he would have played with him. It's the getting near him that's the hard part. But Toney had the tools.

Amongst all these various sparring stories (which are notorious for their sketchiness and high bull**** quotient to begin with) only the Dempsey account causes you to comment on it skeptically?
