    Hi guys

Put me straight on sparring, done sparring for 3 weeks at a college, nicely settled in the gym, feel comfortable and all, win quite a few fights as well.
The sparring setup was winner stays in with other opponent changing etc
I was kept in the ring as i was winning my first 3 points etc puttin on some good combos and feeling relaxed. Now what i need help with is that i joined a kickboxing club, (kickin isnt my thing but thought of experience a club routine workout etc) when i eventually did sparring at the club the coach said i'm looking for technique, now am i right on thinking sparring is the closest to actually fights etc so you need to be in that frame of mind of winning, if you now what i mean? The coach said dont go full out just use techniques to overcome your opponent? BUT the other coach at college was congratulating me on my approach to go about sparring etc (he was a real coach for so many years) but the coach at kickboxin said i didnt have great technique which in my mind i was wonderin why as had praise from the other coach etc
Thats a small story about me sparring experience. Is sparring basically a practice fight that you go full out as you do, and pretend it as its a real fight or is it just a technique thing u take it easy as its just a practice punching combo excercise... sorry if for the essay guys...... cheers

Didn't understand a word you said, sounds like you don't know how to box you just go in there and brawl.

Making the assumption that both coaches are solid dudes, maybe your technique is "bad" because Boxing and Kick Boxing are fundamentally different sports? You wouldn't expect to be "great" on a rugby field if you were a great American football player and vice versa right? Same things applies.

Your apples aren't oranges because apples ain't oranges.

    A few things:

Sparring isn't about winning and losing. It's about learning. You can spar hard and you can spar light, you can spar with a specific purpose (eg, working the jab/defence, inside/outside, against the ropes, etc), or you can just get in there to have some fun and see what happens.

If you spar every time to go all out and try to "win" you're eventually going to come up against someone more experienced and better than you and you're going to have a very rough night.

If you've been training for three weeks at a gym and you're already "winning" most of your sparring sessions the place can't be very good.

Kickboxing and boxing are two different things. Your coaches are also different people and different people approach these things in different ways. Maybe you coach at college was one of the muppets that puts new kids in the ring on their first day to see how tough they are and if they can take it, and applauds his guys for engaging in gym wars because it hardens them up. Maybe your new coach sees sparring for what it should be, which is an application of the techniques you've learned against a live and fully resisting training partner.

    Long story short:

You spar to learn, not to win.

    Wise words.

Also, if you'll extend me the privilege of offering some constructive criticism, your command of the English language appears to be lacking. :bart I really didn't understand much of what you said lol. Your essay receives a C+ from me. If English isn't your first language, we'll up it to a B+. :thumbsup
