Train as you'd like to fight.

If you spar hard enough you'll be ready for most any bout presented to you.

Spar easy/light and what fight would you truly be ready for.

A fight against a cream puff, that's what you'd be preparing for by sparring easy.

You will find that most are far from cream puffs.

Prepare to fight by sparring hard.

Have you ever heard about the wars fought down at Kronk? Or the wars at Galaxy?

    Building beasts.

Light sparring only works if you have been fighting every week like in the old days and are trying to stay sharp. It won't help you get sharp. You can't get your timing down that way and you need to get used to getting hit.
Where I live now, I have 3 state Golden Gloves champions. which means nothing. These guys are used to soft sparring and, when they spar, they spar in rotation- so you may do 6 rounds, but you are out of the ring for 3 rounds between rounds. Then they get to regionals and get hit and you can see it in their eyes and that's that. It is why i stay out of the gyms around here and why this state will never have good fighters.

What do you see in their eyes?

They don't want to be there. Shock. Fear.

Golden gloves doesn't mean ****. You can have a handful of guys with **** all experience fight each other and then the winner who's a novice. Not always the case as some are obviously good but it doesn't always paint the full picture.

Hard sparring needs to be done semi-regularly (1x a week), and more often when fights are approaching.. I agree with all the reasoning above..

With that said, the idea that you need to spar hard all the time is outdated and irresponsible. 1% of the people in any gym have a chance of actually achieving something in the sport, getting their brains beat out day in and day out isn’t the way.

The shock of getting hit hard, the understanding that it will happen again.

What state are you in? Its crazy people could even win a state gloves title and be unprepared for getting hit hard!

Right now I am in Montana. The two years that my guys won, the tournament was in Western Montana and they only had to fight once each to win. As I said, it is no huge accomplishment. All the guys they compete with train the same way.
Currently there is a club in Billings which is doing it right; they work hard, compete frequently outside the state and they have a girl ranked in the top 5 nationally. They started with a lot of young kids and built them up so, when my guys won, their fighters were much younger. If they are not already, I expect that club to dominate the state Golden Gloves for some time.
