Hi There, 1st post and all that! Just started to get into boxing training and will be using the heavy bag at my gym. I have heard lots of differing opinion on this but is it better to use bag gloves or regular boxing gloves when hitting the heavy bag? Also what weight would you recommend? I am about 164lbs and 5ft 9in. Any help for a complete novice would be good. Thanks!
Welcome MrThorne! Bag gloves all the way mate. Normal boxing gloves or contest gloves are ok but are generally smaller with less padding therefore offer less protection to the tools of the trade - your hands! Also, don't go just whacking the heavy bag as hard as you can and think you'll develop power. Speed and technique are your best route to developing power. Move around the bag, throw combinations and work on technique, including footwork and remember, learning how to box is a marathon not a sprint!! Good luck!
I use boxing gloves myself, as does every other pro I know. A nice set of 10-14s depending on your personal preference is fine.
I am 5ft 11 and 168lbs. I use 14oz normal boxing gloves and they do me fine. I think both are ok to use, its just down to personal preference. Assuming you are going to be sparring (where you will learn your trade) i would go for the weight gloves that they spar with so you feel comfortable with throwing punches with that weight glove. Its amazing how a few ounces can make such a difference to the way you punch I am not Floyd Mayweather, but these are just my thoughts x
