Tertiary, to the heavy bag and the accuracy (aka double-end) bag.

The speed bag has always been primarily just for showing off in the gym, even many old-timer coaches admit this openly.

Kind of like rope-skipping 'tricks'. (although straight up skipping rope itself without the fancy stunts does have applicable benefits in boxing, more on that here: http://www.boxingforum24.com/showthread.php?t=530810)

Personally I've always thought the speed beg helped me with arm endurance and keeping my hands up. I used to end my training sessions with around 10 rounds on the speed bag alone, and around that time I remember my arms rarely getting too heavy to hold up while sparring or hitting the heavy bag.

At my new gym my coach doesn't like it when people use the speed bag cuz it's too noisy. But I still try to hit it for 2-3 rounds for my cool down. I'm sure there may be other factors at play since I don't train exactly how I used to, but my arms (especially my left shoulder) get tired easily these days.

My personal favorite out of the three is the double end bag, though. It feels like more of a challenge since it's harder to hit, and I think my overall punch output is significantly greater when using the double end bag compared to the heavy bag.

If I had to choose just one, I would go with the punching bag, but since you're looking to supplement your gym training with something at home, I think a double end bag could be an excellent choice. When at home you could work on technique by shadow boxing and work on your reflexes with the double end bag. At the end it comes down to what should you work on while at home and how well you go about it.
