Why do you think Hopkins was'nt active enough vs Taylor? Try "speed!" Taylor was visibly faster to get off than Hopkins so my example is spot on! :deal
Why didn't Khan's 'legendary' speed kill Prescott, Peterson or Garcia? Hell even washed up Diaz wasn't 'killed' by Khan's speed, he nearly won by just standing there occasionally pawing at Khan.
A fighter with the skills and deficiencies of Khan has to work around his deficiencies. Khan's chin is less than average. When he's aggressive with good punchers he gets rocked and loses his legs. Mayweather is'nt as big a puncher as some of the fighters that Khan was rocked by, but he still has to be careful Mayweather does'nt time him and hits him in that sweet spot. Style make fights. Khan likely will be more aware and defensive if he were to fight Mayweather, that in itself can prevent him getting rocked and possibly stopped. The respect Khan would have for Mayweather's abilities he did not have in fights he got stopped may help him do better vs Mayweather. Styles people, styles!
The person who started this thread is spot on. This thread neglects that Mayweather has beaten lots of fast guys. The difference being those guys had good chins unlike Khan. Khan may or may not be faster than Mayweather but Mayweather's skills are far superior and Mayweather is much quicker than Khan. Mayweather will stop Khan if this mismatch was ever made.
That's just it, even the best defensive fighters cannot defend against Floyd because he is so fast and accurate, he also throws shots you just don't see coming. Khan has never shown good defense in the past, he might TRY to be more defensive against Floyd but it will not work because he doesn't have it in him. Khan doesn't have the IQ or reflexes to avoid Floyd's shots, no one does, so at what point did you think Khan went from chinny, easy to hit doofus to ATG defensive genius? :think
You're looking at it from the standpoint of just Mayweather. Kind of like having blinders on. Its very possible that Mayweather's quickness just tee's off on Khan. Mayweather's defense has been superb but its mostly come against fighters much slower than he. Imo the only fighter to match Mayweather's speed was Zab Judah, and I had Zab outjabbing Mayweather and winning the first 4 rounds of their fight. Can Mayweather pot shot from distance and tee off with his quickness against a fighter with the combination speed of Khan??? I think that is an unknown. If you watched the great defensive Maestro Pernell Whitaker face pure speed in Diobilys Hurtado. Whitaker looked like a rank amatuer trying to decipher Hurtado's speed. Thats why I say I'd love to see Mayweather try his hand against speed the the typical strenghth and power he's been facing lately with the likes of Canelo and Cotto.
Khan shouldn't be close to a mayweather fight, period. As for the thread, people see a fast fighter and they think it means skills.... youre right that speed does not equal skill.
Whitaker is not Mayweather though, Floyd will deal with Khan with ease! Khan is not hard to hit, lacks real power and doesn't even look all that fast anymore, whereas Floyd is at the top of his game and makes the best look amateur. He has seen it all before and Khan brings nothing new.
While I to also find it interesting to see how Mayweather will deal with Khan's speed. Khan has shown nothing of late to suggest he belongs in the ring with Mayweather. Khan is way more aggressive than Hurtado was against Whitaker. We've never seen Khan move and pot shot like that. Khan doesn't counter like Hurtado, he tends to throw punches in larger combination. He also tends to stay in the pocket with his hands up doing nothing it's what had him in trouble against Maidana on the odd occasion. He also doesn't have the 4.5 inch advantage and 4 inches in reach that Hurtado had. Khan and Mayweather are similar in height and Mayweather has a slightly longer reach. If Khan did fight like Hurtado, constantly move, counter, pot shot, rarely throwing more than 3 punches at a time, not standing in close doing nothing then he'd give Mayweather some problems but he has never shown the self discipline to fight this way even against big hitters like Maidana.
He has speed. What does Garcia have? A sluggish, plodding approach and he has power. So it's speed v power in this sense, and Floyd will never realy be bothered by power.
Hurtado was'nt really countering Pernell. What Hurtado did was lateral around the ring, stop on a dime to throw flurries, and zap out to continue his lateral movement. Pernell was on the chase the whole night and finally nailed Hurtado with a big shot after getting dominated all those rounds in the next to last round I believe. Hurtado's sucess came with the ability to get his speed off first. For the record, I'd put my money on Mayweather to beat Khan, but I'm just tired and bored of watching Mayweather take on the same type of styles everytime he climbs a ring. Its always fighters that come to him that are not anywhere near the elite level skillwise. Or its fighters that have skill but dont posses any physical advantages over himself like JMM. In Khan at least you have the fact that he's just as fast and I believe faster. Khan punches harder, and their height and reach is about the same. I say if Khan throws fast flurries from distance and darts out, he can make it a very competitve fight. Discipline is required of course, but at least with Khan you have a fighter that has the phyical attributes to compete with Mayweather. I dont know about you guys, but I"m through watching Mayweather take on slow plodders like Cotto and Canelo. Time to see how Mayweather fares against speed and the physical traits that are comparable to his.
Nope, it isn't. Hopkins shouldn't have been fighting at 160 anymore at age 40, look at how much fresher and more energetic he looked when he moved up! He wasn't active enough because he was conserving his energy, when he stepped it up in the later rounds, how did Taylor's speed help him then? Besides, Taylor barely won anyway. He hardly landed any punches, and presumably was awarded rounds based on mildly superiour activity.
