Agreed. Great win for RJJ. He was on a special level at that point in time.

I had no dog in that fight. All I knew was that whoever won was going to be go on to do great things. The fight itself was a disappointment but Roy was just too fast. He knew exactly what had to be done. Toney looked flat and listless. Doubt it would have mattered though.

    Hearns vs Duran?

Toney was not in shape for this fight.

True but I don't rate Duran as highly as most on here

I love Toney but I'm not gunna make excuses for him if he was genuinely out of shape then it's nobody's fault but his own

Before things went south for RJJ he only fought once above Light Heavy in becoming the first man to toy with Ruiz and rest the belt from him. So, yeah, I guess you made a point stating the obvious.

actually i would pick toney because he was naturally stronger and his frame was built to carry more weight effectively, the only motive because toney could not beat jones at 160-168 was his speed, but he would not be that fast above 175.

Jones beat Toney who may have been drained making weight but that was nothing new. Jones beat him w speed but there is little doubt that Toney was a better fighter.

I agree. Jones skipped Cruiserweight. There is nothing to indicate, pre Ruiz, that he couldn't have done well in that division. In fact, he was barely abouve the weight limit for that division, when he fought Ruiz. His record at Cruiserweight is misleading (greatly) because he only fought there after the Tarver trilogy - when he was jaded.

i like more toney stylistically and i think that the hw version of toney at 217 who fought evander beats any version of jones

You are absolutely correct. I also feel RJJ beats Toney at any weight.

Not at heavyweight though. Jones had limited movement in that weight class. His speed advantage would also be more megligible. Add to that his fragile chin....

    Toney was the better heavyweight.

In a way, James Toney beat himself that night. He was dead at the weigh in.
