Upon trying to master the speedbag, I watched countless videos on youtube of guys doing all types of tricks with the speedbag including hitting the bag with their elbows, and hitting the bag in ways that don't seem to simulate a punch. Now is it just me, or are all these tricks extremely overrated and a waste of time trying to learn? I just don't see how some of these exercises benefit a boxer in the ring, and I wonder if any of these speedbag "magicians" can even box. What are your thoughts? without being too shy I have some of the quicker hands at my gym and I never used any speed bag, mitt work and strength/speed training is sufficient in this department
I never use a speedbag and never really have it doesnt relate to a real fight. I perfer the double end bag because while it improves speed it also improves accuracy, timing, head movement etc and you can throw real punches. You cant throw proper punches at a speedbag and therefore to me its useless.
Speed bags help timing/rhythm and they exercise your shoulders because you have to keep your arms up. However, they are not a high priority in boxing training, I usually just throw in some speed bag work at the end of a workout as a sort of extra.
