Not a huge Spence fan but give the kid some credit!

He's traveling to the UK to face the man that many claimed is the #1 welterweight (a HUGE welterweight, they said), that Floyd Mayweather allegedly ducked. Now all I hear is people giving Brook credit for facing Golovkin then Spence. Confusing, because Spence is the inexperienced greenhorn traveling overseas to face, arguably, the #1 welterweight.

Give the KID some credit, he's doing what everyone complains about other fighters NOT doing. Ward doesn't travel, Canelo won't concede weight, there's no threatening to walk over money, he's not cherry picking.

Why are you guys so inconsistent? Spence is doing everything you people want him to.

My pick: Brook by decision. His skill combined with his accuracy and experience give him the edge, imo. Spence is sometimes susceptible to counters and sloppy during combos.

I agree 100%, although I'd add Brook is also capable of getting the stoppage.

I understand that you once had swollen discs on your breasts like Errol does, but is that really a reason to latch onto that sack?

Neither Brook nor Spence actually deserve tons of credit for having this fight. Well, you could argue Brook does after the orbital bone break since Spence is considered to be a huge puncher. The reason I say neither deserves a ton of credit is because Spence is fighting for a title. That is what you are supposed to do. He's also getting a career high payday for this fight. It isn't like Brook is just some fighter that Spence is going way out of his way to go up against because it is a tough fight. He's doing it for the belt and for the money, which is what you are supposed to. As for Brook, Spence is his mandatory opponent. He is also supposed to fight him. There...isn't actually anything special about this.

I think the reason Brook is given credit is the fact that they were one after the other. Golovkin, ok, was in some ways a nothing to lose fight since he wasn't expected to win to start with. But after the damage he took in that fight, to go straight back in against a young, hungry lion who is a big threat to his status as one of the top dogs (if not THE top dog) at welter without wanting a tune up is ballsy. He has everything to lose in this fight, albeit also the scalp of a very highly regarded contender to gain.

As for Spence, I give him some credit, albeit less so. Ultimately, he is doing what a contender is supposed to do and jumping through whatever hoops he has to in order to secure his title shot and the opportunity to become champ. It is respectable to a certain extent when you consider the likes of Jermaine Taylor, who refused a world title eliminator with Howard Eastman because he would have to get his passport out and relied on his team to pull strings to secure the shot at Hopkins. However, in an ideal sport, contenders should be willing to do whatever it takes to prove themselves, rather than deserving special credit for it.

I'll give him credit if wins and same to Brook but I'm not gunna start giving people credit for taking a title shot, isn't that what there meant to do?

It's a sad day in boxing when we are being told to give extra credit for a boxer at 27 years old taking a shot at a title. This kind of thing should be the norm

Well, it's true that you don't like certain boxers.... because of not a styles thing, but because of certain other things.

In the present climate that boxing is in, a climate of ducking, fights not being made because of money etc. I think it should be noted that 2 young fighters at the top of the division are going to fight. It shows that fans are excited and that's a good thing for the sport. We as fans can't have it both ways, like the OP stated. Criticize fighters for not fighting, yet remain silent when top guys make a fight happen because they simply want to test themselves against the best in the division.

It's basically turning the thing around here.
Instead of shaming the guys that only fight at home and refuse fight once they lose control over judging and location, we have to give credit to the guys that do what they're supposed to.

And if you still want to give Spence credit, why not all the boxers out there who have been doing this their entire careers. What's so special about Spence in that regard?!

You're completely right. But there are so many fighters who won't fight the best these days that it is somewhat noteworthy when a top contender fights a top belt-holder!!
