Mikey Garcia is a TINY fighter who has NO business fighting a big strong welter like Spence. At the very least, Mikey could have tested the waters at 147 before fighting the absolute best and most avoided fighter at welter. Look, I'm a big Mikey fan and also a big Spence fan. I watch all their fights. Mikey took a big risk fighting against Lipinets and he won every single round. That was amazing and he showed his P4P skillset by easily beating one of the better guys at 140. I believe the fight was for either a vacant title or for Lipinets recently won title. As for Spence, its absolutely ridiculous how badly he is being avoided at Welter. Porter wants no smoke. Neither does Danny Garcia. The only dude to fight him was Brook who was coming off his first loss to GGG and coming down in weight from 147. I understand why this fight is being made. Spence wants to get paid and will gladly beat the smaller man. He's safe and he's gonna get paid well. Mikey, on the other hand, is showing tremendous balls here taking on Spence. Of course, he sees it as HIGH REWARD and LOW RISK fight. Its High reward becasue if he beats Spence his career will absolutely reach the stratosphere. If he loses, its too the much bigger man. He is expected to lose and there is no shame in the loss. What Mikey is not considering, however, is that he might get beaten down real bad in this fight to the point where he will no longer be the same fighter he once was. I really dont see how he is going to be able to keep Spence off of him for very long. Spence eventually walked Brook down, a much bigger and much stronger Brook. How will little Mikey keep Spence off him? He wont. He will lose and it will be by stoppage. Its doubtful that Mikey power will carry to 147 and Spence has shown he can take a big shot in the Brook fight. In the very unlikely event that Mikey somehow beats Spence, expect Spence's career to take a serious nosedive. The best thing about this fight is Spence fan boys spinning this into a good fight lol. They had no qualms about railing GGG and Canelo for their fiasco fights but dont have a problem at all about this fiasco of a fight. Mikey's last fight was at 135 for heavens sake. He is a small man about to fight one of the biggest welters in the business. Mikey, prepare to get stomped.
I'm not so sure. Spence is bigger, but for the most part is still a very green fighter and has only fought one good opponent, which is Brook. GGG and Canelo on the other hand weren't just bigger, but were also more experienced. Spence still makes a lot of mistakes and his stamina is very suspect. If Mikey were fighting Thurman or Crawford I agree that they would both crush Mikey, but I can see Mikey using Spence's inexperience to his advantage.
You said If Mikey were fighting Thurman or Spence I agree that they would both crush Mikey I believe you meant to say Porter But those two dudes dont want that Spence smoke and he's a fellow champion. So why would the guys that are avoiding Spence be more dangerous than Spence himself?
Surely Mikey would be paid better if he just fought Loma? Spence isn't just big...hes also very good. Mikey must see something in him (if he actually ends up fighting him, and with Garcias call out to fight ratio that's a big if) Spence will break him down and stop him mid to late rounds in my opinion.
Good catch. I meant to say Thurman and Crawford, but I also think even Porter would be tough for Mikey just due to styles. Spence is a great talent, but with his inexperience I think him facing Mikey at this time could be a recipe for disaster. Spence has everything to lose and nothing to gain fighting Mikey. I rather he keep fighting and eventually get a unification bout, since the only reason Mikey is entertaining a fight with Spence is because Spence is the most vulnerable of the champions at 147 and still a developing fighter. I don't think for a second that Mikey is taking this fight for a quick cash out unlike Khan or Brook. Mikey clearly is seeing enough vulnerabilities in Spence right now that makes taking this fight less risky than Loma, who isn't anywhere as big or powerful as Spence, but is extremely experienced along with having both a high workrate and a great gas tank. Thurman is both fast and an explosive puncher, so I can see him knocking Garcia out early. Crawford isn't much of a puncher at 147, but he's easily the most balanced fighter at 147 and is excellent at pacing himself, so I could see him stopping Mikey late. Porter has an ugly style, but he also has a high workrate, chin, and gas tank, which I could also see being too much for Mikey.
useless and shameful fight if spence cant find anyone at 147 then move up to 154... spencer also picking on smaller guys
Totally agree, should respect weight classes as it’s still a rare thing, could easy end up like Brook as Spence is no joke and they might think they can simply pull Garcia out but those things can happen so fast.
both guys are in my top 3 favorite fighters, they are in a very small group of fighters that i have actually studied and feel confident placing. spence, and crawford 50/50, are the only 2 fighters at 147 who could beat mikey. buds footwork and numerous methods of attack will present problems to mikey who is a reactive aggressor. he will not get the looks to be able to predict buds attacks, they are too varied to pin down. his best chances will come when they trade combinations on the inside, where i see mikey as the more accurate and aware. spence drops his hands when he punches, which mikey already sees and im sure hes figured the distance, rhythm and timing he needs to take advantage of that. the only question i have is whether mikey has the pop to buzz spence, because its going to be 12 rds of heavyhanded pressure at a pace only freaks can maintain. if mikey can make spence think twice about coming in to bang the body, like canelo did to ggg, then he has a shot at getting a points win. i think the gym stories about how hard mikey hits might be exaggerated, but ive seen him hurt guys, and nobody has ever said mikey lacked punching power.
