Spinks deserves more respect. But yeah, Conney was a mess.

Spinks could beat a washed-up Cooney, but couldn't take on Tucker.Unbelievable.

Did Spinks really beat (an old) Holmes twice? The first fight Larry was way overconfident and spent too much time trying to figure out Spinks style and get him to come to him. The second fight he put his foot on the gas pedal and lost a horrible decision.

Spinks was a great LH. His win over Qawi was top, and though EMM had cut too much weight, that was a great win as well, same with the KO over Johnson. As a heavy, Spinks was lucky, and especially lucky that Cooney was drunk and washed up. Oh, and overrated (outside of massive punching power with one hand). Spinks beat Cooney the way Cooney "beat" Lyle and Norton.

I agree Cooney was a mess and Spinks always deserves more respect...washed up or not, given up 30 lbs is no joke..Spinks being 30 and 0 with 20 KO"s that night and people just wanna say it was because Cooney was a drunken mess...no nevermind that Spinks beat that ass that night.

i love spinks at 175 and he fought who was necessary (holmes) to take the belt at heavyweight. after that, his heavyweight career was gravy.

no one ranks him great there anyway, it's his light heavy career that is legendary. he beat an old, fat cooney but as a performance, I get a kick out of it.

It was a good win for a guy who was the linear champion in the summer of 1987. Even up of course it's a mismatch, but the thing Cooney had going for him was his size advantage. I thought it was fun to watch Spinks slap him around.

I agree with the Southpaw. Fantastic performance by Spinks. Michael would have beaten every heavy in the division at that time, except Tyson. I can't believe people call him a fraud. I think they're pissed because he finally rid us of Holmes.
