You're right, Jeff Lacy would've been an all time great had he not met Calzaghe.

Had Zarate not destroyed Batista the Brazilian would've went on to beat everyone for the rest of his life.

The other big thing in that Cooney/Spinks fight was the cut mike Spinks got in the 4th round. That was a real bad cut and bleeding badly. If the opponent had been someone other than Cooney, the boxer types could have stopped Spinks for a tko loss. Guys like a Witherspoon or a Tucker or a Bruno or Carl Williams.

That was a silver platter to some fighters and at that stage of the game, Cooney did not have the tools to capitalize. Then again, he was a slugger not a boxer, but a heavyweight boxer in that scenario probably prevents the Spinks/Tyson fight from ever happening.

The '80-'82 version of Cooney would have destroyed Spinks. Cooney's career was over after the Holmes loss he mentally just could not come back from it. He wasn't developed or moved properly and was not ready for Holmes at that time. How can you fight an active Heavyweight Champion when you haven't fought in 13 months? That is idiotic.

Cooney would have done better had he not been with Rappaport and Jones and had he had someone like Gil Clancey as his trainer from the start. Victor Valle was not what Cooney needed.

Cooney himself will say he should have never lost to Spinks and it was embarrassing for him. He said he didn't train because he never thought the fight was going to happen there were lawsuits with HBO etc trying to block it.

All credit goes to Spinks for the win. Cooney is a matter of 'what if' he never fulfilled his potential and he has nobody to blame but himself.
