Nope he didn't but like Holmes said after the fight Cooney didn't take a good punch high on the head he just had trouble getting to it because of Cooney's height. Holmes caught him a few times high on the head and wobbled him good. The one knockdown was right on the Chin. The thing is Cooney didn't use his height in that fight at all Valle kept telling him to 'get low' I guess to get inside and rip his hooks to the body? :huh

Holmes fought a very disciplined and tactical fight he didn't go wild with Cooney and took his time wore Cooney out and "got him drunk before he mugged him" like Holmes liked to say. Holmes was a damn smart fighter and very unappreciated at the time. :good

Holmes said it all the time and if you look at what he did he would soften you up with his Jab then start throwing the kitchen sink when you were tired. It worked.

makes a lot of sense, which is why the frazier destruction was so out of character i suppose

Holmes obliterated Leon Spinks also. I think he knew Leon wasn't a threat so he went right at him and destroyed him. Leon's Chin wasn't that sturdy either....

Cooney's people deserved the 'Assholes of the decade' award for putting him in with Holmes in 1982. He'd had bugger all experience. A fight with a couple of top contenders would have shown whether he'd really had it.

Completely agree with that. He needed a good 2-4 more fights in a year or two before taking on Holmes (or Weaver, or Dokes for that matter). Even if he lost one of those fights, he likely would have grown much more as a fighter and still likely gotten a title shot a year or so later. Cooney definitely fell into a funk after the Holmes loss, and was apologizing to everyone. Really, he should have been bitter, fired his management team, and hired Clancy right then and got back into the ring.

Interestingly enough, through four rounds against Spinks, the fight was even on the cards, with respected judge Lederman having Cooney ahead by two rounds.

    Harold Lederman 37-39
    Tom Kaczmarek 38-38
    John Stewart 39-37

Maybe they felt that his limitations were bigger than his strengths and wanted to cash in ASAP.Who knows, but he really didn't accomplish much after the Holmes fight, although he may have been ruined by that fight.

I still say they should have fought Weaver first for the WBA belt. That was a winnable fight for Cooney he was guaranteed 5 million and would have helped prepare him for Holmes.

Instead I remember Rappaport and Jones were trying to have him fight Joe Bugner :rofl:patsch in December before Holmes in what was supposed to be March but got pushed back to June because of the 'injury' that many Boxing people say didn't exist. In the end he got 'injured' and the Bugner fight was scrapped and Cooney ended up being inactive for 13 months.

They used Bugner as a sparring partner for the Holmes fight and he told people that he was able to hit Cooney at will with his right hand and Holmes would too and that is what ended up happening it seems like every right hand Holmes threw Cooney ate.
