Cooney may've had a few beers in training for Spinks, but Cooney wasn't railing up the white lines prior to Spinks.... Cooney was off the Coke by the time he ws kayoing Eddie Gregg inside 1 round in '86..... Cooney just never wanted to be a fighter.... Cooney showed up for Spinks looking sun tanned and pretty solid at a mature 238 pounds in 1987, but Cooney was also rusty and unable to let his hands go like he should have...

Everyone is missing the point. Many on here obviously inexperienced with hwt boxing put too much emphasis upon size. There are a tremendous amount of bouts through hwt history that size takes a huge back seat to speed and skill. This bout is one example of a much smaller man totally outclassing and then knocking out a much bigger fighter.

Cooney's abject whipping at the hands of Spinks was almost Bobickesque in it's embarassment.

Don't get me started on Bobick......... Bob never had any defense at all..... Once Duane decided to go after the real pro's (Norton and Tate) it was the beginning of the end for him..... The Knoetze loss later was just added icing on his retirement cake......

Bottom line is Cooney was outclassed...undertrained or not he got beat up by a much smaller guy

Cooney did have an extra side of right hands in that fight..And I agree that him fighting Holmes took alot out of him..I know the booze and poor diet didnt help but he was never the same again..

    Part of a Cooney article:

"I went to cocaine and drinking, the whole nine yards, and this is when my troubles started."

Later, and still in that destructive state, Cooney took a fight here and there, but he was no longer into it. He was going through the motions. Of course he wanted to win every contest, but the zest was gone.

It took him two years to get an important fight, the opponent being Michael Spinks. Now, he tells of the sad shape he was in. The night before that Spinks fight, Cooney was full of booze and high, which didn't work too kindly on his body.

Gerry got knocked out that night by Spinks in a fight he should never have been in. "If there was ever a fight where I was thoroughly ashamed of myself, it was that one," he said. "I never, never should've lost to Spinks. I keep thinking about that one and trying to make amends for that loss
