That's what was annoying me, the Ring or who ever decided to have Usyk now as champ, has put it in this crazy situation.
I blame Fury one hand for confusing the situation by retiring for two minutes then coming back, and the ring mag for changing their champs.

This is how boxing “works”. If a champion announces they are retiring and their is confirmation of this via a face to face conversation (phone or otherwise) that title is then considered vacant and the top two challengers face one another for the title. Same thing occurred when Ali retired in 1970.

The belt was gifted to Holmes and numerous others. Holmes didn't stay lineal via the IBF and it's completely irrelevant to the point.

Marciano retired in April 1956. Patterson beat Jackson in a 12 round eliminator to face Moore for the vacated title.
This was the time honoured method of finding a new champion. Pairing the 2 leading contenders. Seems reasonable!
From memory the ruling bodies were, the European Boxing Union, New York State Athletic Commission, British Boxing Board of Control, N.B.A. While lurking in the shadows were IBC, Norris, Carbo, Palermo.
That’s when Patterson became the youngest undisputed champion. There were no other claimants to the championship. Check copies of The Ring, Boxing News, Police Gazette, Boxing and Wrestling in 1956/57, if you doubt the above.

Well I just woke up but looks like I missed all the clarifications needed. DirtyDan there it all is in the last two or so pages, laid out. Beating Trevor Berbick doesn’t make you champion of anything.

How did Patterson get the shot at the vacant title? What boxing organization (sanctioning bodies)ranked him to put himself in place to win the "lineal" title?

The Ring magazine doesn't give the fighters title shots, though. Despite the alphabet organizations being corrupt, they hold more weight than a magazine. I like what The Ring did in the early 2000's to get rid of all the alphabet soup BS but those sanctioning bodies are what trace lineage back to boxing's champions.

    I understand that.

Who ranked Patterson and Moore as the top 2 leading contenders? Which organization's belt did he win?

Wrong. Beating Berbick made Mike Tyson the youngest heavyweight champion in history.

But where does the history start? Who created the heavyweight championship of the world?

Let's say Fury beat Usyk: Will he be undefeated three time lineal champ?

Is it fair to say then you consider Berbick the world champion at that time?
