Who are some guys who aren't ATGs or even regarded as very good that would pose huge problems to some greats and beat them? One I'm going to say is Carl "The Truth" Williams. His arms are so freakishly long, and his jab and height combined could spell trouble to many boxing type ATGs. Against punchers with good hooks, Williams is cooked, but against boxer like Holmes (who he nearly beat) Tunney, Ali he may be able to give them all they can handle. Another one is Ike Ibeabuchi. A huge, strong fighter with the stamina to go the distance at a frantic pace, granite chin, and pretty fast hands. Anyone who goes toe to toe with the Tuaman and wins is one hell of a fighter. He was pretty untested though, his only other quality win is a KO over Byrd, a very good win. With his physical attributes he would give many greats all they could handle and beat some. Who are some others?
i think ike ibeabuch could have shown greatness if his career wasent cut short. iran barkley and ralph jones come to mind.
Wilson's a good pick here. He was very good against Mercer but that was his best fight and still only managed a draw against an unmotivated Mercer. He was unknockoutable though, amazing chin. I see him going the distance with pretty much anyone in history, but the chances of him beating a very good fighter is pretty slim. Another one is Valuev. With his HUGE size and stamina he could pose problems for some very good fighters.
Yeah, Marion's literally one of the most durable fighters ever. Un****inbelievable. He beat a few undefeated prospects, and you know he was on the wrong side of more than a few MD and SD's.
Jimmy Young was pretty good at making the opponent miss or to prevent them to score twice on consecutive blows. Very unpredictable movement is the key for him. Any slow handed, slow footed slugger can have a bad night vs him. Was fast and aware of how to get out of trouble. Often he was the underdog and often he surprised us. He should be Top 30-35 of all-times. Good call on Iran Barkley, his brutal style may cause mayhem with a little bit of luck. Ask Tommy Hearns... The Tokyo version of Buster Douglas is amazing as his reach, physical presence, positioning and right hand were pure magic against a stunned Tyson.. but how often can he focus and be consistent like that in a fight? Once in a lifetime performance for him. I don't think Ike Ibeabuchi qualifies as an underdog here. He showed that he could handle different styles with success in the Byrd and Tua fights, two of the division's best fighters of the time. He was big, strong, good inside, could box and brawl. Could've improved his defense a bit more, but to me, he could've been a Top 15 all-time HW if he had a conventional career.
..two names jumped oout to me even before i opened the thread....jimmy slade (50s) and saul mamby...who may still be active as far as i know.
He's actually rated rather highly in terms of his quality as a fighter, but Sammy Angott must be considered a prominent spoiler for his accomplishment of nailing a defeat on the previously undefeated Willie Pep.
great points. i think that ike would of been the next great HW. if he had of stayed out of trouble, we would not be complaining as much about te hw division today henry akinwande is a guy who could of give a lot of greats trouble (if in the right mindset). edwin viruet is another one
marlin starling. some consider him to be a great but he is not generally perceived as one. also what about Honeyghan eubank and herol graham were also awkward mother ****ers. randolph turpin is another one vernon forrest is not ATG but he could beat a lot of ATG welters
I think the Tua fight knocked a few screws loose in his head. After this fight the stripper incident happened and his weight began going up.
