Why do people emphasize on doing these 2 exercises when you ask about upper body strength? Don't these 2 exercises work on the lower part of your body?

Yes they work your lower body, but they probably bring them up because they're a lot more beneficial than bench pressing

because your quads, hams, glutes and back are by far your biggest muscle groups, and when these grow, the rest of you will grow, even if you do not train arms/shoulders/chest.

its kind of like how spot reduction of fat is impossible, your other muscle groups will grow a bit if you train them and avoid the big muscle groups, but not by much. they will just stop growing once you reach a certain point.

I've heard something like that before. Something like squats will activate your cns to produce more testosterone and/or HGH and it'll all make your muscles grow.
My friend was telling me about it and pretty much how squatting will get you bigger biceps or some crap :nut

thats only part of it, even if you are juiced to the gills they will not grow past a certain point until your legs and back get bigger. i dont think anyone knows why exactly, but thanks to the wonders of synthol we know it is a good thing.

Squats are the daddy of strength conditioning.

Squats, deadlifts and benching are the only exercises needed to get big and strong.

Next comes heavy bent over rows.

    Then military press.

If you only did these exercise you would get great gains.

The other exercises are secondary and for refinement.

They build a LOT of overall body strength compared to anything else, so they benefit the upper body lifts to a small to moderate extent too. Plus they are the best way to train your lower body. Plus the largest muscles in your body are in the "lower body" (including posterior chain).

Although they aren't strictly upper body lifts, so anyone telling you that they are is technically wrong.

If you can squat or deadlift 600lbs, benching 200lbs will be no issue for you, basically. If you are keep trying to bench 200 and failing, and you never squat or deadlift, your body may benefit from the added stability and overall strength from these two exercises.

hindu squats until you are about to puke.

squatting heavy WILL slow you down. i think lunges are a better exercise for boxing if you want to lift.

while lunges and very high rep hindu squats will keep you light on your feet and an explosive monster?

squats won't really slow you down unless you let them, take from that as you will.

this is bang on. heres a routine similar to my old football routine that took me from 180 to 215.

    Workout A
    3x5 Squat
    3x5 Bench Press
    1x5 Deadlift
**2x8 Dips (if you cant do these or no assist machine then do Decline Dumbbell Bench Press with your hands Facing each other)

    Workout B
    3x5 Squat
    3x5 Standing military press
3x5 Pendlay or Bent Rows (or power cleans)
**2x8 Chin-ups (recommended mainly if doing the cleans)

monday wendsday friday alternating between a and b
