Lloyd's problem for most of his career was injured hands. When his hands were healthy and rested he was a sharp and cool hitting fighter. But even with his bad hands he was beating good fighters. His head movement and footspeed was impressive by any standards. The Curry win was no fluke.

As good as Honeyghan was Montreal Duran is on a totally different level so Honeyghan isnt replicating anything even close to what Duran put on Ray that night.

Correct honeyghan was a very good fighter in his prime. I think he was the first British fighter to really spank the yanks so to speak. Meaning with attitude and showing no fear. Of course not long after Benn, naz, eubank etc all came along and the typical British stiff upper lip changed

Honeyghan was awesome against Curry. Never mind about Curry being 'flat' that night,I reckon Lloyd would have had his number anyhow. Leonard though was another matter and a level above. Honeyghan would give a very good account of himself but eventually get stopped.

That night against Curry, Honeyghan was an absolute fireball. Battered Curry all over the ring. As Unforgiven said, Honeyghan had very bad trouble with injured hands all the time. If the version of Honeyghan that fought Curry got the Leonard of the 1st Duran fight, I could see Honeyghan causing Leonard all sorts of problems. Excellent hand speed and good power coupled with great head and foot movement.

Obviously SRL in top form would be expected to beat Honeyghan....but not in the case of the versions of both fighters mentioned by the OP.

There's always going to be favouritism towards the star fighter in these questions.
When people say Montreal Duran is levels above the Honeyghan of the Curry fight they are mostly basing it on Duran's reputation and career against Honeyghan's, rather than how the two of them actually looked and performed.
Duran was sensational against Leonard, and Honeyghan was sensational against Curry.
There's every reason to believe Honeyghan would have given Sugar Ray Leonard or any of them a tough close fight on his best night.

My pleasure, mate. And I have to say I do now agree with you that, given enough variables (fit hands, Leonard being complacent, Honey hitting peak form), Honeyghan was one of a handful of welters that just might have pulled it off. Not saying I'd bet on him but I wouldn't bet the mortgage on Leonard either.

Do you remember Honeyghan saying Tyson had told him he fought like a Yank, the way he bent at the waist and attacked? As someone else has said, Honeyghan broke the mold for the typical British fighter. Lloyd loved that.

I do and remember thinking very much so. The way he went over and did that to one of the most respected and top American fighters of the time was something brit s weren't used to. I actually think British fighters started to change from then on. We started to play them at their own game if u like. Nigel Benn was another one

Prime Leonard would destroy Honeyghan, Curry was weight drained, and as was proven multiple times after the Honeyghan
Fight, didn't have the best of chins. If Hearns couldn't out punch him, Benitez couldn't outbox him, and Duran out brawled him, but the fight was closer then most like to admit, especially the last 4rds. What the hell Honeyghan would do? In fact, all 3 of the ATG's he defeated beat him, with his best chance of winning maybe Benitez, or a lazy Duran (New Orleans version) and if their at the top of their games his chances would be slim to none.

The thing is, if it was Ray Leonard who had defeated that version of Don Curry, people would have no problem calling Curry an ATG too. The win would be canonized.

People find all sorts of ways to discredit Lloyd Honeyghan's brilliant win over Don Curry for the undisputed world championship and others will deem such discrediting "fair". It's a familiar trope of this forum, and indicative of the narrow favouritism that pervades here.

LH was a buzzsaw against a weakened Don Curry similar to Dwlight Braxton beating a weakened
M Saad Muhummad. It was a huge upset like Turpin winning title from SR Robinson. If SRL
took LH lightly against a ruthless LH then SRL could be in for a rough night. If this is the case
i see SRL winning by a controvesy decision and everybody screaming robbery and everybody
    demanding a rematch.

The Duran of the Palomino fight was a very dangerous fighter...and his victory is "underrated".
