Finals caught this on Espn classic. Incredible fight. I had Hearns 125
to Leonard 121 going into the 14th. The stoppage was justifiable.
But I think it could have gone on longer. Thoughts?

Hearns came in too light and it cost him the fight.

Tommy's legs were cooked. Even had he been merely given another standing eight, or by some miracle managed to make it out of the 14th, there's no way in hell he makes it another three minutes.

Agreed. Leonard was also closing mighty quick on the official cards with his multiple point rounds. Even if he did make it out of the fight, he wouldn't do it without standing 8 counts or knockdowns, and he would have lost the fight by a razor thin decision.

He just couldn't last the 15 with Ray. That was the difference.

Once Ray had decieded to stop poncing & posing after those 1st 4 rounds he stepped into Hearns & bullied him. I think it was the 6th round when he landed that nightmare lefthook to the ribs, what a sicking punch that was & then he battered hearns all the around the ring & only the bell save tommy. Thats when Hearns got on his bike. But for me it was an incredible performence by Leonard in that 13th round when he unloaded that barrage onto tommy, i always show that too anyone of the younger generation who've never seen SRL at his peak best & what it takes to rip victory from the certain jaws of defeat. He had that total full-on killer instinct & viciousness that belied his exterior image. I had him 4-8 going into the 13th so even if it was'nt stopped he could have still pinched it as he looked certain to absolutly dominate the rest of the precedings.

Nice info. Yes the flurries in round 13 by leonard were very impressive
some of the best I've ever seen. Leonards determination got him this win.
some nice post fight footage sugar ray talking about how important
it was to him to silence the naysayers

Great stoppage. Tommy came back & had a great career, he may not have had he took further shots, he was gone.

Leonard realised Hearns wasn't the same puncher up close that he was from a distance. And he needed to start getting in his grill, shortening the distance and digging in bodyshots. Plus Tommy didn't have the biggest lung capacity. Once Leonard realised that he never looked at Hearns the same and would always beat him in a 15 rounder.

Ray was just a little more experienced when they fought. Hearns could have gone longer since Ray was a little arm weary, but in a way Davey Pearl saved Hearns from taking a bad beating and probably made it so that Hearns could fight another 25 years to his last fight in 2006.

I've got to get a good quality vid of hearns leonard 2 now. In the espn classic
footage srl admitted that tommy won the second fight, but leonard wouldn't
look him in the eye and say it haha. The athleticism is off the charts though
15 rounds in near 100 degree weather crazy. Any boxers school me if you have
a 12 or fifteen round fight are you at some point going to spar for that lenght of
Time? For example two different worlds if a classical musician is preparing for
an hour recital he or she will play that hour program before the concert to ensure
they have the stamina. What about boxing?

It's the left hook too the body here in the 6th on 4.52 that turned this fight & 7th was SRL's most dominant. I've always said that the Duran who beat SRL in Montreal would have jumped all over Hearns, it's as plain as day watching this. Once Ray realised that staying on the outside was a no brainer he just adjusted & stepped in to cut the range & countered, left too the body was the killer as it left Hearns static & available.

This is SRL at his absolute natural best in the 13th when he unloads, this summed up the guy for me & that was when i bought into him, the will too win when staring into the abyss of certain defeat.

    Who was talking Duran?

Small moments from the SRL fight tell you Duran would have jumped all over Hearns, but never mind taking any credence whatsoever from Hearns utter destruction of Roberto. It will be on highlight reels as long as the earth is round. What a KO. What an anniliation.
