He earned $150 for winning on the undercard of the Henry Armstrong-Fritzie Zivic welterweight championship fight in which Armstrong, whom Robinson idolized, took a frightful drubbing from Zivic, a ring ruffian who used his head, his elbows and his thumbs as expertly as his fists. Robinson vowed to his mother, who despite earlier opposition to his fighting became a principal booster: "Mom, I want to fight Zivic. I'll fix him for the way he beat Armstrong."
