This puppy reads clearly. Robbie beat the count but caught some extra time due to some ref stalling then came back like a freekin monster. http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...IBAJ&pg=4166,2367577&dq=robinson+levine&hl=en http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...AIBAJ&pg=6046,513489&dq=robinson+levine&hl=en Here Arcel talks about Levine weighing 164 by fight time. To be sure 1946 SRR is a slim welter. Was Artie denied a KO?? Tough call.

S, I stand by my version of the fight. I had read about the "long count" in my local paper, in a later edition of Ring Magazine, and most telling ,not soon after in Stillman's gym , the topic was discussed by spectators, trainers, etc...I was in the middle of some groups listening to all this, and finally our ESB historian Henry Hascupp agrees with the "long count "theory... Of COURSE Robinson beat the 10 count, but right after Robbie was decked and hurt, the referee instead of starting the count, walked Artie Levine over to a neutral corner [why didn't he just order Levine to go?],and then WALKED back to Robinson, still on the canvass, and then started the one, two...til Robinson got up before the count of ten... So yes technically Robinson "beat" the 10 count, but Artie Levine got shafted by a protective referee, or an incompetent referee...We must remember Ray Robinson was a gold mine those days, and a lot of hanky- panky existed then, witness LaMotta / Fox, Ike Williams ,unable to get a bout for awhile due to his confrontation with the mob controlled boxing guild of those days...
Its so difficult to say without the footage to back it up. What seems likely is that Robinson was down for over 10 seconds, however that does not mean Robinson could not have risen earlier if he had too, we just do know if that was possible or not. Every boxer knows that they have to the referee's count of 10 to rise. If that is more than 10 actual seconds then that's neither here nor there for them. Any smart fighter will use the time they have to recouperate before rising as the referee comes to 8 or 9. If the referee had taken the count up earlier could Robinson have risen at 9? Almost impossible to speculate. I'd love to see footage of this fight though, hope some surface.
