I think Robinson also beat Cyril Delannoitt (who beat Cerdan), Steve Belloise, George Abrams, among others. He beat Lamotta several times, I believe.
I'm not sure Hagler even has a better resume at 160. I'm far from being a Hagler detractor but I feel Robinson's value as a middleweight has been greatly underappreciated with recent revisionism, for a couple of reasons. 1. People concentrated too much on his "won it back 4 times" feat, and focus on his career 1955 -1960 which was way past prime. And 2. The old timers would so often repeat "but he was really at his best as a welterweight !", which is true, but distracts a lot of people from valuing his middleweight career and wins against middleweights. I say this as someone who very recently was guilty of doing just that. Apart from perhaps Harry Greb, I think Robinson's middleweight stuff is perhaps comparable to any in that weight class.
I would favor Robinson over anyone from 147lb through 160lb, save perhaps Harry Greb. Prime Ketchel, Monzon or Hagler come closest to beating him.
He never ever beats Tiger Jones...Hes lucky he didn't get stopped in that fight. Of all the names he fought, this fella was the one that just walked through him. Lamotta who was a beast had nothing on him v SRR. I think Robinsons great, but the best p4p fighter ever doesn't mean hes the best at 160. Theres at least 5 a head of him. Don't read me wrong, I respect everyones opinion, i'm not dismissing anyones view, I just think SRR as good as he was cannot claim no1 at 160 ever. How does anyone see McClellan v Robinson going ???
I would have to go with Marvin on points, hell of a fight though both technical and savage at times as these guy were great at both, they also had great stamina over the full 15 rounds I just think hagler with his switch hitting just edges it.
I don't know about that. His switch hitting didn't work against SRL, those first 2 rounds definitely contributed to him losing the fight .. Also Hagler had problems with SRL movement. SRR with the more experience and the better all around boxer ..imo .. takes this in a UD
Good points! however I think hagler was a little over the hill when he boxed SRL and took him lightly, he would never take Robinson lightly that's for sure lol
I don't think so. Hagler had a tendency to let slick boxers off the hook. Look at his early losses, of course he avenged the fights but still he did lose. Look at the Duran fight, Duran survived by using his very underrated boxing skills slipping, counter punching, he had Hagler puzzled though Hagler won. Did he slide that far after Mugabi? Look at his title defenses, almost all were straight forward brawlers. Powerful men, but made to order for what Hagler did best. And that was destroy any one foolish enough to engage in a war with him. If Ray Robinson did what Ray Leonard did, ( and I'm sure he would've) box him, stick and move, don't stay on the ropes, counter punch, force Hagler to initiate. He beats Hagler easier than Leonard did.
