I've not seen enough footage of Slattery to confidently predict outcomes in cross era fantasy fights, but if you're interested in a succinct summary of Slattery's LHW career, navigate to number 34 here - https://tss.ib.tv/boxing/featured-b...light-heavyweights-of-all-time-part-two-40-31
I haven’t seen Robinson face a dancing speed freak like Slattery before. His style is just so bizarre and unique I think it would be interesting, especially considering how much success he had against Loughran and Rosenbloom. Even gave Greb a good fight in their early rounds. This content is protected
He does not look great against Berlenbach, I gotta tell you. I liked what I see in Berlenbach. He looks unbalanced and with his chin hanging in there in the air. Anyway, he was very tall for those days, I can see Ray having trouble to close in since he used his jab a lot, but watching that footage I could easily trade Berlenbach with Ray there and the outcome while not by stoppage would be Ray winning the fight IMO.
I just watched a video (Rich the Fight Historian) and it says that Rosenbloom said that that fight was ... now I can´t remember if he said fixed exatcly, but wasn´t serious!
I don’t find his punch form or output very impressive either, but what makes Slattery unique to the rest of his era is how fast he was. Quite a few tablets used to compare him to Ali when the latter first came around in the 60s due to their hands-down dancing. Ali was criticized for a similar style. I think his speed and reflexes hold up well in the footage, he’s like elastic.
He fought Slattery about 4 times if I remember and Slattery was believed to have won twice. Slattery also almost beat Tommy Loughran for the title in 1927, and we have footage to account for Loughran’s skill. Makes me think Slattery’s awkward style would have success against other great to varied extents
Slattery was a phenomenal natural talent, but he was ultimately an underachiever. He could definitely spell trouble for Robinson with his speed, and size advantage, but he might also find a way to f*** it up, as he frequently did.
