How would Sugar Ray Robinson do vs Sugar Ray Leonard 147, 160 Tommy Hearns 147, 160 Roberto Duran 147, 160 Marvin Hagler
I’m actually most worried about him fighting Hearns. Think he had a good chance at beating the others, though not guaranteed either. Tommy was tall, rangy, hit very hard and brought some things to the table that might trouble Robinson stylistically and physically. The others might too but he’d have a better chance against them I think
Interesting I wouldve thought most would think he would have the most difficulty with Hagler because of the natural size and strength difference.
I think Hearns might be the easiest one for him here, honestly. Robinson was just as hard hitting, faster , more skilled, smarter, tougher and only 2 inches shorter. I think Leonard was very much Robinson's equal in many regards, but Robinson's overall superior offense would get him the win here, but it would be a very good and close fight. Robinson and Duran are the definition of 50-50 imo, they're hell for each other, both would suffer a lot of damage against the other, it'd be tough to watch at times. In a series of 10, they might just go 5-5 imo, so I'm not willing to choose here. He could beat Hagler, but I'm not sure he would. Robinson had trouble against strong, bullish fighters like LaMotta, Fullmer, Basilio, Zivic, Abrams, Servo and Turpin. Hagler used a similar low center of gravity and pressuring style when facing taller and lengthier fighters. His southpaw stance, double amount of possible angles, and sheer skill would be something Robinson had never faced at Middleweight. He also had the chin to absorb Robinson's best shots and keep on coming, not many fighters can claim that. And unlike Fullmer or LaMotta, he wouldn't get needlessly aggressive and overextend, meaning Robinson wouldn't catch him that easily coming in. But then again, maybe the craftier, faster and more elusive Robinson can manage to fight in his preffered range and outpoint him, Hagler did sometimes get tricked and confused against smarter fighters, like in the Duran fight. it would be hard though.
I'm assuming Robinson would be at this best in all these fights, but realistically in a real life scenario he probably could lose 1 or 2 or these fights. Robinson running the gauntlet against 4 ATG's at different weightclasses ? Highly unlikely.
All four opponents would be very close match ups for SRR - Hagler - A wafer thin decision for Robinson. Boh very good offensively but Ray's movement takes it. Duran - Robinson via a clear, albeit, close decision. Leonard - A classic technical and skilled fight. The earlier Ray's better offensive qualities sees him through. Hearns - The Hitman's reach and power actually has him in front by the tenth round or so in an action packed bout. However as soon as Tommy starts to tire,Robinson's vicious combinations stops him in a brutal ko.
Robinson beats all four and on points. No one is getting KO'ed here unless its Hearns as his chin doesn't seem all that great, but otherwise I think it'd be a points win for Robinson. Hagler would be the most difficult because of willpower and chin, but I see him losing to Robinson from just not being creative enough offensively. LaMotta had a ridiculous chin, possibly more than Hagler, yet that wasn't enough to help him win against Robinson. All it did was enable him to take a beating.
Hagler - I don't think of Robinson as the kind of fighter at middleweight as he was at 147. Winning the 160 pound title five times is a great achievement but also speaks to his vulnerability at that weight. I have Hagler by decision. Duran - Roberto is my man but his only ATG win above lightweight was the one fantastic victory against Leonard. I don't believe Duran would have been able to get into Robinson's head the way he did with Leonard. Robby by decision at 147 and possible KO at 160. Leonard - I think of welterweight Robinson-Leonard as the ultimate boxing fantasy match up regardless of division. Robby has more power, Leonard has a bit more speed. Robinson could move from defense to explosive offense in a heartbeat and Leonard had, perhaps, boxing's best killer instinct and ability to finish someone off when they were even slightly hurt. Leonard spent his time moving up and down weight classes after he left 147 and it's hard for me see Leonard as great at 160. I have Robby by decision at 147 and 160. Hearns - Tommy could have have been the best fighter ever if he had a chin. He was a great boxer and a powerful puncher. Alas, his whiskers failed him on the biggest stages. Robby by KO at 147 and close decision at 160.
