At Tommy Gilmour's St. Andrews Sporting Club last night, Monday, two former Scottish amateur champions made their debut in the paid ranks. The show opened with Joe Kelso from Muirkirk, Ayrshire up against Shaun "Slasher" Walton from Telford in his 52nd outing. 6 x 2's was the distance and Kelso was out to impress, with fast, hard jabs in the first. His hard work paid off, sending Walton to the canvas in the 2nd round under a barrage of left hooks to the body. Experienced Walton managed to see out the contest but Kelso won every round on Kenny Pringles card 60 - 53. Next debutant was the exciting Darryl Campbell, Buckhaven, Fife. Boxing out of Kevin Anderson's old Denbeath Boxing Club. He was in with Stourport warhorse, Ernie "Gypsy Boy" Smith in a sceduled 6 x 2's, Ernie in his 157th contest. Like Kelso, Darryl started fast and sent Ernie sprawling to the canvas in the opening round. Ernie Smith rarely takes a backward step and he paid the price again with another 8 count in the fourth. The end came at 1:54 in the 5th round. Ref Pringle had seen enough under a barrage of shots and waved it off, deeming Ernie Smith in no position to continue. Top of the bill was a welterweight 8 x 2's officiated by Scotland's only A Star referee, Victor Loughlin. Undefeated prospect Jamie McLevy, Whiteinch, Glasgow 2(1) - 0 was up against Swansea's Chris Brophy in his 34th contest with Chris sporting a magnificent multi coloured hairdo! Both boxers were straight out of the blocks and straight into it with McLevy just edging the first round. Good prospect that he is, his inexperience told early in the 2nd when a battery of punches from Brophy sent him to the ground. He took the 8 count from ref Loughlin but was down again a minute later. Vic Loughlin took a good look and obviously decided that he could continue. He knew to keep the centre of the ring and managed to see out the round. The minutes rest appeared to be enough, his boxing skills beinning to tell on Chris Brophy and McLevy started racking up the points. Brophy was given a time out in the 6th after what appeared to be a low blow from McLevy and Jamie went on to score his own knockdown in the 8th but the fight went the distance with McLevy remaining undefeated, 78 -72 on the ref's card. Glenrothes boxer, Yanko Pavlov, took the Whiteinch Demolition Boxer of the Month for March. As he was on holiday Prizefighter Lightweight Champion, Ryan Brawley stepped into the ring to accept the award on Yanko's behalf from Eddie Beattie of the sponsor Whiteinch Demolition. Next, and final club show of the season, Monday 8th June.
