There are many fighters guilty of fighting spuds, and Danny Green has certainly fought his share. But Green has also fought some top level opposition, and that's where the comparison with Mark de Mori ends. In eight and a half years de Mori hasn't fought top level opposition. Worse, he hasn't fought much in the way of competitive opposition either. Hopefully that will change if he is successful in securing a fight with Wilder or someone of similar quality. It's long, long overdue.
Can you guys ever see a heavy weight fight headlining a big card in Australia or do you think the overall quality of the division (without a big name international) would assign it to a Geale-Green-Choc style undercard?
Good question. Alex Leapai had a headlining fight against Kevin 'Kingpin' Johnson about 6 months ago. But I wouldn't have called it a big card. Kali Meehan and Travis Walker was a big fight. But it went the other route under a Daniel Geale headliner, backed with a Billy Dib fight, on what was a big card by Aussie standards. The biggest problem faced by Mark is, at present it wouldn't matter who he fought, he would struggle to pull a big enough crowd to fulfill the financials. For that reason a semi-main event under a big Geale fight would make a lot of sense.
It may need a decent win by an Aussie to coincide with the Klitchko's retirement before it appeals as a viable career option for anyone else. Could an Aussie win (here or overseas) ***** the ears of a few would be mma converts to jump across to chase some coin?
Are you suggesting an Aussie winning a world heavyweight title post the Klitschko era and then enticing someone across from MMA as a challenger?
More like (this is a fantasy): -Klitschko(s) titles go vacant due to retirement before someone knocks them off. -Things get interesting in that division. There could be four heavyweight champs instead of 2. That's applicable even if they get beat. -Perhaps Aussie guys struggling to crack mma scene could have appeal as opponents/draw cards to guys a)seriously having a go at a heavyweight career and b)guys looking for title defense fights against good $ opponent whilst avoiding genuine top 10's. I'm just basically saying that there might be a few more fights around in the future and at least the belts will be in different countries like the middleweight divisions. That's where all the fun is because there's plenty of fights. That might equate to at least a few more fights here, more appeal than there is now to the young guys who are looking at mma. Boxing is not dead.
I'm glad you qualified that by describing it as fantasy. Who did you have in mind? Nathan Corbett? Peter Graham?
No. I've lost track of the Muay Thai scene as I don't have Fox but I know that some of have a few boxing stats on their records. Wayne Parr I would use as an example of a guy who tried when he was younger. Didn't set the world on fire but the exposure that Muay Thai has on Fox followed him. I'm talking about the has beens of the future, in five years or so when Klitschko boys are gone. Those names would've been perfect five years ago but what would the point have been. I don't know the boxing skills of Soa or Hector but as the Aussie cage scene grows there will be more guys that who are on the cusp. Do what Graham did to DeMori but the other way around. Call out some mma/Thai guys and jump on their popularity.
Would never happen and should never happen. You think a boxer could just transfer over and fight for a MMA world title? I'm a MMA fan before a boxing fan, but to suggest a guy from another combat sport could come across and hang with a world champ? As a fantasy great, a somewhat of a serious question, pffffft.
I'm doing a bad job of stating my point. Sorry. I'm not talking about world titles I'm talking about guys taking the step of being domestic prospects to being able to attract a serious fight. Big names don't knock on the door of nobody's. Nobody's don't gain respect fighting the usual suspects. Wayne Parr tried Muay Thai in a cage so try this; Corbett (not such a bad idea after all) vs DeMori or Lepai (example)in a cage or ring BOXING rules 3 x 5 mins. Put it on one of those flashy Kickboxing cards on the Gold Coast. Eliminate the chance of shitty undercard. No belts, no WBC or equivalent. Exhibition. It harms no ones record. Very possible KO. I could even see the loser walking away with a few fans or at least some new found respect. The fans will decide. If it happens to be attractive it could give these guys leverage to attract a real contender if its on TV or there's a crowd. The next fight may just be a proper headline against a proper opponent.
Much to my disappointment as a boxing fan, it seems to be the current path of Lucas Browne with combat 8. He has his 2 next fights with this boxing vs MMA idea just when he seemed to be making some positive moves in boxing. I think he genuinely likes the idea and the $ might be good but I think it stalls his career.
