i dont understand how you get world class fighters with stamina problems, its not like lacking knockout power, stamina is the result of good cardio. so why is this even an issue? are some fighters just lazy? :think please speculate
Cardio/stamina decreases with age, that's just the human condition. Outwith that, some fighters concentrate too much on being powerful/explosive/physically intimidating than they do on building up cardio. For example, Jean Pascal looks like he is cut from marble yet gasses after about 6 rounds every time. By contrast, Joe Calzaghe and Antonio Margarito were nowhere near as physically impressive but both men could fight at breakneck pace for 12 rounds.
On the other hand you have monzon smoking 40per day yet having great stamina. boxers wou lack stamin a should do more cardio.
Proper food makes a big difference. Erdi was a 10 round fighter...until he got finally a nutrition coach...and I saw him fight a full 12 rounds. Some I think spend too much time with weights. A bench lifter's chest does nothing in boxing but be weight to carry around and get in the way. A shelf chest and big biceps also something no boxer really needs, makes for a chicken wing jab...that telegraphs. You need back, lats and shoulder with out big bulky biceps. Some time look at shrunken chested Tuney, then look at his back. Not a gram of weight in the wrong place. Pacing could aslo be a factor.
Also, experience breeds stamina. Guys with no experience of fighting into the later rounds will often gas even if they are young and fit (see John Mugabi's performance vs Marvin Hagler), whereas veterans with vast experience of fighting the full distance can often do it with ease even if they look out of shape (see Roberto Duran's performance vs Iran Barkley).
Some boxers naturally have great stamina, some don't. Of course to maintain great stamina you have to keep your cardio up. But some boxers no matter how much cardio, etc they do...will always have stamina issues, minor or major. One factor it could be down to is breathing. Maintaining good breathing whilst exerting a great deal of energy in the ring is vital.
I was watching a video of Duran vs Barkley recently and one of the commentators (I think it was Al Bernstein) made a great point about how Duran's ability to be relaxed in the ring played into how he was able keep going. I suppose that comes with experience as well.
Genetics (this is why some fighters always gas) Worng Diet Dropping weight/dehydration to make weight To much muscle Poor training camp
I used to be the same. Never really knew why I could be doing so well in training/sparring, etc...never had trouble with my breathing. But then have trouble with it during a 3-4 round bout. My breathing was terrible during my early amateur bouts.
i remember reading about boxers that prepare their breathing for fights, its probably linked to the above posts about breathing through the nose but whats the technique they use ?
