I naturally seem to bring my right/back hand towards the left side of my face, so it sits jus in front of my chin - particularly when shadowboxing oddly. I dunno why, I was never taught to do this and my coach goes nuts each time he sees me do it. I see some theoretical drawbacks, but it never seems to cause me problems as it's not like my right hand is all the way over onto my left side. Anyway, I was recently told that what I do is quite well known, like a cross guard or something. Any opinions on this? And if it's ******ed, how the hell do I fix it, as it's basically an automatic position and I can't spend the whole time concentrating on my right hand when I spar
It just depends on how you use it. If it's used to block straight punches, especially when you're going backwards or fighting backwards, then it's acceptable, but if you're infighting, you better get that right hand back to your face or you're liable to get KOed by a left hook. In fact, you should probably focus on keeping your right hand glued to your right face.
Oh yeah, as soon as it ends up on the inside I don't seem to do it. I'll make a point of it though. Apart from as you said, going backwards are there any other ways in which I can use it to my advantage? I have no idea where I picked this up, I kinda twitch my right between the right side and front of my face, but mostly just in front of the chin, so it's not just sitting there.
nah your alright i keep it infront of my face to, you'll see the left hook comming before you see a jab so i always keep it infront
dont slide to much in front of your face your open for a left hook to the head and if your elbows not tucked a vicious liver shot
