As an interesting but relevant side note here is an acount of Billy Papke's win over a green Carpintier. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9F07E0D71630E233A25757C2A9669D946396D6CF
Carpentier could hit too ,he kod a few Heavies ,and he could box well,Ketchel would have no easy task with the Frenchman ,Georges had a dig in both hands unlike OBrien ,who boxed on the retreat in both fights and got caught late,Ketchel knew he had nothing to worry about power- wise , after sampling Carpentier's right Stanley might get a bit cautious about charging in.Good matchup.
Wouldn't be competitive, Ketchel by KO. Carpentier was too poor boxer to survive Ketchel's onslaught (and Stanley was cutting the ring better than Dempsey).
Carp was around 18 for the Klaus fight, changes one's(mine anyway)perception of that performance. Good match-up.
I think Carp would try to fight safe, box Ketchel and look for openings for his right hand. Ketchel would close the gap, get in his preferred range and throw bombs. He'd probably be chasing Carp for most of the fight unless George was able to land a good shot and back him up, if so he might take the offensive, but not for long. I think Stan would pretty much control the fight and press the action the whole way, keeping Carp too busy on defense to launch any significant offense, eventually Ketchel would wear Georges down and knock him out, as I said earlier, in the 8th round.
well, i am alone here but would pick carp to box ketchel and possibly stop him late with a big shot. would be interesting though
BIG DEE HERE= Ketchel by KO under 10 rds, he was just too much animal for Carpentier. Then again Ketchel was too much animal for everybody at Middle and Lt. heavyweight.
