Let's pit a great from yesteryear against our champion today. Ketchel, on film, seeks so have no regard for defence, but he does have an awesome array of attacking ****nal, he has a very solid chin, he has otherworldly power. Canelo looked meek against Mayweather but aside from that he has shown multi dimensions. He has stalked smaller opposition and outboxed bigger opposition. Plus he has a great victory on his ledger and has been the man in two weight divisions. For me it is obvious that no MW in history should try to have a war with Ketchel. Canelo will have to rely on hand speed and timing to try to outbox him and hope to catch him with a flush counter down the stretch. One man is great and one man is not yet so. But with 100 years separating these champions, how do we see it going? Let's say Canelo in his very next defence is up against the Ketchel who destroyed Kelly to unify the claims. The Ketchel who seemed invincible with Tyson-esque clear up of the division. Who do we have?
There is a reluctance to have an seven playing field and it's so frustrating. I wonder if it borne to shaky whiskers, as in he's knows he can be hurt? Skill wise I see him as far superior to Ketchel and his career trajectory prior to facing Khan has been incredible. He's faced the best of his weight class and twice has faced a high risk low reward fighter. But now he's made his millions and got his MW belt he is totally cheapening the meaning o the word champion. I reckon we'd see Canelo outbox Stan for long stretches but at some point get arrogant and pay the price. I'd be rooting for a Ketchel KO here.
Let me at least see Canelo v GGG first...I'm not like most on here, I think Canelo has a decent skill set, but need a little more time. Will say though that Canelo is much better defensively, and is the bigger man...but would be interesting to see if he could deal with not just the power of Ketchel...but the dirty boxing as well.
Given what both fighters bring, Ketchel may have a slight advantage. He brings a very testing style, Canelo's punch selection would have to be on point. He throws a good uppercut, which should be a nice neutraliser to Ketchel's approach. Ketchel needs to tire his man out early so his opponents power punches aren't as effective later in the fight.
