Maybe it's the influx of re-watching some of Lewis back in the late 1990's but I'm starting to think he was the complete package as far as Heavyweights are concerned. He's tough, he's big, he has range, he has an awesome jab, he's fluid, he can box, he can punch, he has great skills, pretty nice speed, and has the ability to throw most punches with dynamite. His downfalls are his overconfidence (Letting hands down, showing off, etc), and his chin is probably just average (But no worse than Louis', perhaps better and definitely better than Wlad's). I dislike how he plays it too safe at times when he shouldn't but if you bring the war to him a lot of times he'll throw it right back in your face. This is really having me re-evaluate my beliefs; my whole system is just being turned upside down. Perhaps Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali could rival him. I'm starting to think that Lewis might be able to control Ali with range, his jab, power, and great fluidity/combos. Tyson is a whole another question, but I'm liking Lewis chances more. If I ever thought it was 50/50 I might think Lewis has the edge if Tyson can't get him out of there early.

I'm speaking purely based on how he looks on film and putting him up against ATG HWs and not through some legacy viewpoint. What do you guys think? Is this just reactionary because Lennox Lewis footage is fresh in my mind (I've been watching his best of best stuff too. Golota, Briggs, etc). On a last note, obviously someone like Joe Louis might be the most complete as for as skills are concerned, but try to evaluate this by skills and natural ability (Height, size, range, power, etc).

I tell you, if there is one thing we need around here, it's more threads on great heavyweights and how they compare head to head, in the opinion of guys who don't really know ****.

Random points that come to mind :

    1. Even in the minds of Lewis's most zealous fans (or especially in the minds of his most zealous fans), he didn't really even start to smooth out amateurish flaws in his game until after McCall KO'd him in 1994, so it would be interesting to chart his progress from that level to most complete HW head-to-head all-time bar none.

    2. Not sure if his defence was much good at all.

    3. A prime Muhammad Ali would have made him look a bit silly really, head-to-head. In our hearts we know that.

It was a spur of the moment thread, but we all know you really don't mind because there are no two things you like more than shitting on my threads and raising your post count. And if this guy doesn't know **** he has done a good job of fooling some people. Now move along, this thread probably won't turn into anything so you won't have to worry to come back unless the discussion does happen to turn good.

Everything you've said is something I used to say and believe. I'm not sure if I don't but I'm just challenging my viewpoints. I know you not big on Lewis because I used to be behind you in a lot of these debates that ranked Holyfield and Tyson ahead.

    1. He had flaws, I think Steward massively improved Lewis. Even if he was more boring, he was exponentially more effective.

    2. I think his defense was good; at the very least adequate. Was his defense much worse than Louis? If so, you would think his chin would've been exposed more. Perhaps his chin wasn't that bad, or maybe you think his defense was basically his range (And that mainly was his safeguard).

    3. That's what I've thought, too. In my heart of hearts, but my brain is questioning that. Ali would have to make the fight and show some forward movement. Does he really have the quickness to leap in and out or just jab around Louis. Liston didn't have great success but did have marginal sparring success with his jab. Lewis was almost 5 inches taller than him, faster and a better combo puncher.

What .... for "most complete" ?

Muhammad Ali might have been the greatest (maybe) but I dont think he was ever the "most complete".

Tyson doesn't even belong in the discussion.

Lewis grew on me but he irritated me because for all his assets you never knew what Lewis was going to turn up. He had an upside and a downside but he was a blend of just about everything. A powerhouse who was clever and could box. As well as a jab, snappy right hands and combinations Lewis had George foreman raw strength so when all else failed he could bludgeon anyone out. When he was switched on he could be ruthless and devastating when starting fast. For powerhouse super heavyweight sized fighters starting fast is a gamble if it doesn’t pay off. His concentration would fade as he tired and for all his desire Lennox needed to stall for a minute of most rounds just to pace himself. This is where lively, pacey fighters could make him look average and greater fighters would expose this. I rate him high; he makes my top ten and is above Tyson, holyfeild, liston and foreman in all respects. If you had to pick a heavyweight who had it all lennox had it all.

As has been said, history will be kinder and kinder to LL up to a certain tipping point. He'll never be rated within the top three (hopefully) but should become a 4-10 mainstay, probably closer to the back end.

Specifically with regards to head to head, he'll rise up pretty high - again, with a plateau before reaching Ali's level.

To say he's a mouthful on a good night for almost any champion in history with his blend of size, skill, and ring IQ is perfectly valid and non-controversial, even now.

I was going to lighten the mood with some Noni appreciation, maybe some Noni doll/action figure photoshops, but Boxed Ears is already here, and his signature is feel-good to 'da max.

I'd say Holyfield is the most well rounded for skill and physical attributes
