Starting to think that Sweet Pea might be one of most underappreciated ATGs ever

He an ATG but definently isn't unappreciated anymore. He had arguably the greatest defense ever and would give ANYONE a run for their money.

 

I'd say he's appreciated quite enough to be honest. He gets just as much love here as anyone. There's only so many times you can make a thread about someone being underrated before it starts to sink in. Same thing with Mike McCallum.

 

You know I often think sometimes if it weren't for the drugs and lack of respect for opponents (overlooking them) ... Whitaker would be considered - arguably the best fighter ever.

"Defensive" fighters like him usually make for boring fights and most boxing fans don't appreciate that!

I would argue that he seems more appreciated now(at least here at ESB) than he did back in the day where he used to get booed for his tactics.

 

That's very true. He also was not liked by fans because of his unsportsmanlike showboating, like when he dipped down to the canvas. That sort of **** turns alot of people off.
