Today I am starting training for the first time ever, and I'm excited. I have followed boxing for over 15 years, and finally after years of thinking about it I am going to actually try to learn some of the sweet science myself. I am 27 years old, and I haven't really exercised since I played basketball in high school. My "boxing training" to date consists of hitting a heavy bag and speed bag I have in my garage, from time to time.

I moved to Las Vegas in May for my other job, but obviously I have a ton of boxing gyms and trainers to work from here. As luck would have it I have a neighbor who is a trainer who trains people out of his garage.

This trainer has taught boxing, but his main thing is MMA, however I told him I have no interest in MMA training, as a back injury ruined a lot of my flexibility. He said that's cool, and that he'll teach me all the stand-up he knows, which is a lot, as he used to be a boxing trainer as well. He is currently trying to get on the next cast of Ultimate Fighter, so he is def legit. I am signed on to work with him through Thanksgiving. At that time we will reassess, making sure I've stuck with it. At that time I am thinking of joining a "real" boxing gym, one he was asked to work at, and the head trainer there is Derreck Harmon.

For now my goals are to get in shape while learning to box. I don't have any deluded dreams about becoming a professional, but I have read numerous times that people who start training in turn want to spar, then when you spar you may want to do amateur fights, and then after that you may want to fight pro on a low level.

Things I am concerned about is that it's still hot as hell out here in vegas, and we are training out of his garage (it's open, and has fans...it's a legit gym, i was stunned when I saw it the first time, double car garage, lots of training equipment, but still, hot as ****, lol) I am also concerned because, like I mentioned, while I'm not fat, I am very out of shape.

Also at the moment, I'm trying to figure out how the hell I can breathe with a mouth piece in. I have it in as I'm typing this.

Anyway, I may use this thread as a training log, and just to get feedback about what I'm doing, and hopefully get some motivation to continue for the long haul and get in some serious shape, regardless of where i want to go with boxing.

    Thanks again, and I'm pumped!

how good/great you will be depends on the roadwork and the sparring

Theres a training log section here, consider using that as your thread will get lost on this page and it wont in the training log section...theres not many active logs. Best of luck.

Do I start my own training log in here like "Standing8's Training Log" or is there a thread I do my log in. If there is a thread I have to add it to? If there is I can't find it."

Just add your own thread mate.

Good luck with your training, you're not too old to fight. Still about 7 years left as an amateur.

How was the first training? It's a killer isn't it?

I am 27 and I started a month ago and it's amazing, I want to be really good and I am very motivated and working hard, I want to get my technique right and I will be practising a lot more than I do now.

I am sure you will love it, I will keep an eye on your progress.

Good luck! I'm a relative oldster too and my story's a lot like yours...grew up following boxing, and after playing around with heavy bags and padwork off and on in my twenties, I got serious just after my 30th birthday about a year ago. It happened just like you describe it above: I started out wanting to get in shape, then I wanted to spar, then I wanted to fight. My first fight's hopefully happening in a couple of months - my trainer and I are working out the details now.

I know it's cheesy, but boxing has changed everything for me. Not just in the sense that I'm in the best physical shape of my life, but it's been amazing for my mental and emotional well-being too.
