so, a lotta folks talking about berto should retire after getting stopped by soto-karass and losing to ortiz and guerrero. yes, he has some fundamental style flaws, but even with all that, berto's just seems to be turning into a chronic loser. But let's put all those losses into perspective. Soto-karass: berto fought the last 8 and a half rounds with ONE hand after hurting his shoulder. that's a superhuman effort. if berto had two good arms soto-karass would have got abused and knocked out in the late rounds. guerrero: inactivity, a thumb in the eye and the lousy referee that let guerrero hold and hit early in the fight all contributed to this loss. but even with one eye, berto was able a lotta power shots that left guerrero's face all fked up in the end. ortiz: berto was coming off a 14 month layoff and ortiz came in at 170 on fight night. still, berto was able to match ortiz knockdown for knockdown. an active berto would have done better and probebly won. All three losses have extenuating circumstances. berto could just as easily have won the sotokarass fight if he had two good arms, or the guerrero fight if he didn't get thumbed and the ref did his job. berto has had a string of bad luck in recent fights. hopefully he puts things in perspective and doesn't let those losses get him down. I think he can come back stronger and beat the top guys at welter.
Berto was getting drilled prior to hurting his shoulder(which was probably why he hurt his shoulder) and his shoulder is not the reason he lost to JSK in any case. Berto lost all these fights for the simple reason that he never worked on his craft to fix the flaws in his game. His defense has never been up to snuff, and though he has heart he doesn't have the chin to get away with that and expect to win against decent competition. He has never really learned how to box, he's just a brawler with fast hands. Always headhunts, doesn't have much stamina, always looking to bang his opponent out of there with one shot(usually the right uppercut), and when that doesn't work he doesn't adjust. In short, Berto is a talented fighter with heart, but unfortunately also a lazy and stupid fighter who has coasted on that talent against cans for the most part, and the last few years has been exposed. He can possibly recover if he shows he can learn, but at this stage of his career it's very unlikely.
Lol. Are you his promoter? Excuses, excuses. The guy is just not a very good fighter. The state of his career is freefall.
so, you admit he fought the last 8 rounds with a bad shoulder which prevented him from using his power hand...BUT THAT'S NOT THE REASON HE LOST????? it's not like he hurt his arm in the 4th round and got ko'd in the 5th or 6th...he fought another EIGHT ROUNDS with a busted shoulder. He was a one-handed fighter and still he was landing power shots and dropped sotokarass. imagine if he had both hands....lousy as you might think he is, he woulda dusted off sotokarass without a doubt.
having a separated shoulder is not an excuse...it's an injury that would have forced most fighters to quit after a round or two. Berto fought with it for EIGHT ROUNDS! He also got thumbed in the eye and rabbit punched by guerrero in the first round and fought half-blind for TWELVE ROUNDS! That's the facts whether you want to admit it or not. why do you have a problem with the whole story being put out there? afraid it might give too much credit to berto and take it away from the other guys?
the fact that berto could overcome the thumbs in the eye and the rabbit punches, the weight disparities and the shoulder injury and still be in there swinging away and putting dudes on their a88 says a lot about the kind of dominant warrior he is. he might have some technical flaws, but he can fix those just like cotto fixed his. But the difference between cotto and berto is, berto's always gonna have a superhuman heart and an iron chin that can withstand hellacious shots and just keep coming. He's still young with a bright future. Give him a chance to comeback and he would run that division again.
The biggest knock on him has been his record and resume. It just does not justify the amount of hype that surrounds him. He's a young talented fighter, I have no doubts he will bounce back ..
I never said I thought Berto was lousy and I did say he had heart, which is why he kept going with the shoulder. He is just a relative waste of talent. But once again, he was clearly hurt in the first round against JSK when completely healthy, and he wasn't exactly kicking his ass in Rounds 2-4 either. The "dropping" of Soto-Karass was a borderline shot and it was fairly clear that Soto-Karass was trying to sell it as a low blow(which he did earlier in the fight on a light low blow) and didn't get the benefit of the doubt. This was further made clear when JSK was so hurt by that knockdown that he proceeded to beat the candy out of Berto the rest of the round and stopped him in the early going of the 12th. You don't beat Soto-Karass by looking for one big shot as Berto always does. You either put punches together on him or you outbox him. No version of Berto as things stand ever does that.
Berto's losses were against physically imposing aggressive guys. He had no plan B at all against any of them. That's why he lost
Fun to watch, but he's at the stage where he needs to watch who he's matched up against. He's exciting, but limited. Haymon needs to take it easy on Berto for the next year.
He was a young talented fighter 5 years ago... Now he's old and washed up. How exactly will he bounce back?
Absolutely! He can't expect to have a one dimensional approach and coast to a win. He's frustrating to watch.
