Danny Garcia is not hugely popular with puerto ricans. he speaks english and was born in philly. he is going to fight there to try and fix this.to prove he is one of them by fighting over there, good luck to him. I hope he does and they get behind him.

Now that's some knowledge for me right there...had no idea Carlos Ortiz was from NY. Same with Chacon and Olivares whom I'm assuming you're saying were stateside Mexican's. I'm a Puerto Rican who grew up in Cali but these guys were before my time, thanks for bringing it to my conscious this has been the case for a long time.

in he 70's you had Olivares from Mexico and Bobby Chacon from East Los Angeles.

In the thirties you had Sixto Escobar from PR who became the 1st fighter to become a world Champion from Puerto Rico and you had Pedro Montanez based in NY who is among the greatest fighters never to win a title, he was born on the Island but fought and lived out of Spanish Harlem. You have always had Stateside and home grown stars......... Puerto Ricans support their stars .....Stateside Ricans support Island or Stateside Ricans equally and so do Island Ricans, but there is a small segment of Island Ricans who want to claim we NY Ricans aren't really Puerto Rican, which is total Bull****!!! consider that tonight many of them will be consuming the same plate of rice and beans that I will.

Mexicans have a greater separation when it comes to Mexico and Stateside Mexicans and it has to do with the green card issue and racism. Some Stateside Mexicans will not embrace their own ancestral language or customs and will almost fully renounce their heritage, choosing to listen to heavy metal etc. And no way are they going to listen to Mariachi music, You have Ricans that do the same. Not all Mexicans are like that, but Ive met a few. However as a whole Mexicans and Ricans pull for their guys Stateside or from the Island or from Mexico unless he is an *******, but it can be tricky at times. I once had an uncle who is Rican that was rooting for Sal Sanchez to beat Gomez, he didn't like Gomez, his ****iness, and dismissive attitude toward Sanchez before their fight, and if all the bull**** Cotto is pulling in prefight negotiations is true, then Im going to pull for Sergio Martinez. Its not easy or cut in stone but if the PR guy is an *******!! I will root for whoever I like better, if I like their fighting style.

Because we don't feel identified nor represented by them.

For example, Caín Velazquez is sort of embraced, but we actually only feel "Goyito" Perez as ours.

My Dad says "everyone" in PR has already turned on Cotto when Cotto made them pay for Cotto-Trotto while it was free here in the states. Then he also says he goes everywhere with his bodyguards and they seem to be only to keep people away from him, he says they don't consider him a real Rican. A far cry to how Tito conducts himself in public, approachable to the point where me and my brothers were able to have a few words with him looking obviously American while on vacation there. Understandable frustration but, Cotto's controlled mind frame going forward or even in the face of adversity and the combination of skills always manages to make a fan out of me.

MMA getting pretty big there huh? Figured it would, seems like they had lots of representation for quite a while in it. I can almost understand that argument for island PR's in contrast to stateside ones fro the many who also feel that way. I think homegrown people need to understand that we cannot avoid being influenced by the states nor is it a good idea, we have got to be able to to get along with many different types of people here, it doesn't make us any less proud.
