Excessive consumption of alcohol can be lethal for anybody in certain situations but it's especially so for jockeys. Most jockeys are expected to take rides at the minimum 52kg limit but this weight also includes their saftey vest, clothing and saddle. This means that the vast majority of jockeys spend countless hours sweating off the excess calories in a sauna in between early morning trackwork and race meetings. There are a few natural lightweight jockeys who don't struggle with weight but unfortunately Stathi wasn't one of them. The constant battle to keep light saw him suspended and banned from accepting rides weighted under 55kgs. In an effort to lose weight he also took diet pills that are registered as banned substances under rules of racing. The fact that jockeys restrict water intake and eat less than your average anorexia patient and you'll start to appreciate the risks involved with consuming large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time. Stathi Katsidis was one of those well liked guys that rode the roller coaster of life. He experienced more than his share of highs and lows but recently life for Stathi had become more stablized especially on the racetrack. He won the AJC Derby on Shoot Out and was all set to ride the 4yr old horse in the WS Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup in what could only be described as inspirational after countless career setbacks. His death was a sad day for all race fans yet I can't imagine how hard it is for Michael who was as close to Stathi as a brother can be. Hopefully he will be as inspirational as Stathi was in his final year of life.
