You're not wrong when you say that fight 1 looked more like a "Maidana style" fight while fight looked to be "Mayweather style" fight. But when you choose to add these subjective tags to the numbers it then injects bias into your ****ysis. The truth is that fights 1&2 where both Mayweather fights in that they were fights between Mayweather and someone else.

How can we say that the difference between fights 1 & 2 were 100% down to Mayweather and how he chose to direct the fight. Consider that Maidana did run out of steam a bit in the first fight, so do you think that maybe coming into the 2nd fight he may have also been trying to conserve his energy a bit more? Can't say for sure, but that probably played a part too.

Regarding your last point, you see that when you add subjective tags you are changing the ****ysis and really it just goes to show that the problem is really more complicated than just comparing average numbers across 5 fights. But still considering what you said, if you use the updated figure for Maidana (~190 less punches thrown against Mayweather on avg in 2 fights vs that thrown against previous three opponents) then Manny's punch output still dropped more than the "more aggressive" fighter Maidana. That leaves Guerrero, but then again Guerrero has the Klassen fight which really looks like an outlier in terms of punches thrown. That single fight drags his average punch output over the 4 pre-May fights up by 83 punches. Wasn't there also some talk about Guerrero's bad fitness before the Mayweather fight? Maybe just a rumor, but who knows?

The truth is there are so many factors that come into play, every fight has differences, and you can see how you and I can use these numbers in different ways to make different points but we can't actually prove anything with complete certainty. These numbers support the idea that Mayweather is able to lower opponents punch output but it can't rule out whether a shoulder injury played a part in that too. Mayweather was undoubtedly the main reason for the drop in punch output, but I do believe the injury had some effect too, however small that effect may be. But that's just my personal opinion.

True Manny was hitting plenty of air, but he wasn't really getting countered/punished as often as other Mayweather opponents as Mayweather too was hitting plenty of air and getting many of his shots parried or blocked. Mayweather's punch connect rate (according to Compubox) dropped by about the same as Pacquiao's did.

So according to Ariza, Mayweather did not have a rotator cuff injury in his left shoulder when he first fought Castillo? Unlike Pacquiao, he did actually complain of pain in his corner, but his left arm was moving great and you wouldn't have known it just by looking at his arm movement. Here look at just watch the first round again

@1:59 he even throws a leaping left hook. Now, he claimed that he injured the should in training the day before the fight. So was he lying? Did he also have "fake" surgery?

I totally agree that those guys are above today's Pacquiao in terms of aggression. I meant a class above in terms of overall boxing skill.
