    Dear Friends
    kind regards
Today we continue with our Step back in time series.
Lennox Lewis is the best heavyweight that we have ever had representing Great Britain.
A man with dignity and morals, pure class.
He was also a man who was a perfect fighter, multidimensionally sound.
Lewis was a pure boxer who could resort to throwing a monstrous punch, Dempsey was the reverse.
Lennox Lewis's first big match was a title eliminator against Razor Ruddock.
Ruddock had given Tyson two great fights, as well as defeating four former World champions.
Here is Lennox Lewis versus Razor Ruddock.

    Part 1.

    Part 2.

    [YT]FCPcA-4IQ2E[/YT]

As is evident in the above match, Lennox Lewis proved his greatness even at that point in his career.
Lewis completely decimated Razor Ruddock and became the no.1 contender for the WBC World heavyweight title.
This match scared Riddick Bowe so much that he threw the belt in the trash can rather than fight Lewis.
What are your opinions on this match?
Did you watch it at the time?
What did you think of Lewis at that time and how far did you see him going in the heavyweight division?
Even if you are watching this match for the first time, your opinions are welcomed.
If you could watch the match and get back to me with comments A.S.A.P I'd appreciate it.
    yours thankfully
    John

I saw this match when it happened, and have to confess, I expected Ruddock to blow Lewis out. In retrospect, I - and most of the boxing community - was WAY overrating Ruddock based on his performances against Dokes, Smith and others who were past their best, and on his competitive performances with Tyson - who, despite the Douglas lost, was still viewed as the best HW out there. I think people underestimated how much the Tyson fights took out of Ruddock. He was more used up than people thought at the time, I think.

Agreed, the Tyson fights not only took alot of him Physically, but mentally as well. Tyson took every punch Ruddock could muster, including the the extremely powerful "Smash", a punch only a select few could of taken at that time, Ruddock was mere shell of his former self when he took on Lewis, and it showed.

Ruddock took a horrendous beating in the rematch with Tyson.

If he was ruined by Tyson though, it didn't really show in his follow-up fights. Ruddock looked alright against Page and Jackson.

Page and Jackson are not even close to a near prime Tyson, alot of fighters would of had there way with them two, anytime Ruddock stepped up to fight anyone worth a **** after Tyson, he was knocked out, like against Lewis and Morrison.

That's basically it. The proof is in the pudding. Ruddock was never the same after Tyson.

I'm talking about how Ruddock looked after the Tyson beatings.

One way to tell if a guy is "ruined" is how he looks against inferior opposition.

For instance, David Reid in his fights post-Trinidad.

I hear what your saying, but after Tyson he never went anywhere, or won a big match again in his career. It wasnt like he didnt have the skills to win, fast hands, extremely powerful, nice jab, he was top notch fighter physically, but mentally he couldnt get past what Tyson was able to do to him in the ring, walking threw his best shots and end up beating him in the end, Lewis beat lesser fighter in Ruddock that night IMO.

    Dear BodySnatcher
    kind regards
    I agree with your analysis.
I feel that Punisher33 and Zakman have a certain nationalist resentment because Lewis defeated all of America's top talent.
Lewis would have defeated Ruddock in the same way before the Tyson fights.
If anything, it was Ruddock's monstrous reputation that stirred Lewis to destroy Ruddock, who was noticeably confident before the first bell rang.
Razor Ruddock and Andrew Golota both had big reputations going in against Lennox Lewis and he destroyed them because of it.
Lewis won that fight against Ruddock because he was better than him.
    yours thankfully

I remember watching this fight and thinking that Lennox Lewis was going to be the next great heavyweight champ. It was one of the few predictions I got right back then. One of my worst was picking Jorge Luis Gonzales over Bowe!

Moralman, Lewis is better than Ruddock, but as we seen both Golota or Ruddock never achieved anything after there matches with Lewis, Golota fell apart in every big fight of his career after that, and he had at least 7 or 8 chances to win on the big stage, Ruddock lost against Morrison and a few other less notable fighters before retiring, both him and Golota had every it took to be great physically, but mentally they always found away to fall apart when it mattered.

Lewis beat Holyfield 6 years out of his prime and Tyson 14 years out of his prime, till this day I still dont see him beating either one in there respective primes.

    absolutely spot on:good

dont forget michael grant was supposed to be hot stuff until lennox took care of him.
its true, when lewis was around he dominated the heavyweight scene especially more when manny steward took over.
lewis was a sensational boxer and anyone who knows anything about boxing would agree:thumbsup
