Dear Friends kind regards Today we continue with our Step back in time series. Smokin Joe Frazier was known as the Black Marciano, he piled in unreservedly and roughed his opponents up no end. Here is a Smokin Joe Frazier working his way to a title shot against George Chuvalo. [YT]ZhZ4-OFY-iU[/YT] The above match up saw three competitive rounds of action with neither man holding back, eventually Frazier's will prevailed. Here is a question for the ESB pensioners (if there is such a thing), when Frazier first came on the scene, did you think that he would become a star? Furthermore, how highly do you all rate Smokin Joe Frazier? If you could get back to me A.S.A.P I'd appreciate it. yours thankfully John
Not a ''pensioner'', but someone who really enjoyed that clip! A heavyweight version of Hearns-Hagler! No clinches, just non-stop action. Great fight with two of the toughest heavies ever. Thanks for that!
Dear Friends kind regards Smokin Joe Frazier was certainly a great rough and tumble fighter who can fill the seats. Look out for Frazier's title victory against Buster Mathis, trilogy with Muhammad Ali and two matches with Big George Foreman in the future. Frazier provided us with alot of great memories and boxing footage. yours thankfully John
When the ref stopped the fight against Foreman, Chuvalo replied, "What are you, nuts?". Tough guy, but his toughness was his one true championship caliber quality.
Wow, John - that fight really defines the term "phone booth warfare." And what is also interesting is how these guys kept fighting on the inside, instead of clinching like many fighters do today. While Frazier was a class above Chuvalo, George gave a good account of himself up until the very end of the 3rd. I even thought it looked like he shook Frazier a bit right before Smokin' Joe took over. I'm too young to remember when Frazier was coming up. He and Ali - and Foreman - were big stars when my boxing memory begins. But it was great to watch this match and see the early Frazier. Thanks!:good
