Former three-time European Challenger Yuri Voronin next up for the Jackal http://www.boxing-ireland.com/20100910_frampton_jackal_voronin_71.html
very good step up for Frampton. would of been happy if this was his opponent in early 2011. good to see an Irish fighter fighting decent opposition.
yeh I think allot of Irish prospects do not step up there opposition soon enough. Andy Lee, John Duddy, Ian Tims, Anthony Fitzgerald, Gary O'Sullivan, Andy Murray, the Hyland brothers. the real issue is Irish fighters turn pro later than other countries after long amateur careers. When cubans and russian do this they get fast tracked, but Irish fighters follow the regular slow path and they suffer for it.
It's a pity that Irish fighters don't have the easy route that British fighters have like "stepping up" to fight some African farmer for the Commonwealth belt.
Solid pro's are expensive to bring in and shows costly to run. There's not the same amount of money floating around Irish boxing which is why the latvian toilet attendants are brought over. The Irish boxers generally don't turn pro any later than the British ones, there's just not the same opportunities around when they do unless they move to England or the US. Great effort by McGuigan bringing Voronin over. On a side note I hope Martin Lyndsay's career heats up, I can't believe Maloneys not bringing him over to Belfast, he sells loads of tickets and has great potential, terrible management!
Okay a lot of those fighters I'd agree with, but what's your problem with the progress of Fitzgerald ?
His best opponent in 2 years as a pro is Healy who was coming of a first round KO to DeGale in his 3rd fight. I like to see fightets gradualy stepping it up each fight the guys i have liste. Have just been beating soft touches.
sorry but you have the Irish title. Winning that gives u a ranking with the EBU and the irish title fights can involve journeyman
Sorry but you have been told numerous times that the Irish title has only recently been fought for on a regular basis, a point you chose to ignore when discussing Irish fighters.
Are you comparing DeGale to Fitzgerald ?, I mean seriously.......Fitzer lost two of his first 3 fights(and was stopped in one of them). He's only been a pro 2 years and in that time he's developed and managed to come back since those losses and gained revenge on Robbie Long in the rematch and beat Healy for the Irish title half a year ago in a tough close bout. Healy defeated a 9-0 prospect in his last fight and also has wins over Lee Murtagh and John Waldron(the current Light-heavyweight Irish champ). So the win over him was a very good one for Fitzgerald and since then he's had a keep busy fight against another Irish fighter. His trilogy with long will be completed next month and considering that the last two fights between them were absolute *******s that should be another. If he wins that(which I'd fancy him to) I could see him defending his Irish title once more(Tommy Tolan would be a possibility after he gets an 8th rounder) and winning that I'd expect him to push on a few levels. But with the standard he started at and the results he got earlier in his career how could you expect any more from him ? Fitzgerald isn't a bad fighter but he's no Lee, McCloskey, Macklin, Lindsay etc, so wanting him in tougher then he has been so far is someone who'd like to see him probably being overmatched and not developed right. BTW yes this is the same guy Joe Murray beat, and winning the Irish title does not give you an automatic EBU ranking.
And Scott Quigg before that. Good fight for Frampton. Out of the Irish fighters I'm really frustrated by Andy Lee's progress after the Vera lost. He hasn't really being making any progress, just marking time in 10 rounders against sometimes decent and sometimes poor opponents.
