How do you think Steve Collins would have fared in the ring against Jones Jr or Calzaghe? These bouts from what I understand were close to happening...I even heard Jones Jr offered a couple million to get Collins in the ring, before Collins had to retire on doctors advice. I personally think he would have been beaten twice...but do you think he would have made the bouts entertaining?
Collins was a warrior and would not have went away easily however both calzaghe and jones where in a different league. I'll give collins the benefit and say he last the distance against both but drops wide decisions.
Yeah I'd probably agree...he was very entertaining to watch, and had some great victories...but Jones Jr and Calzaghe I think would gain impressive wins over him. Calzaghe had power back then aswell, pity Collins didn't have the motivation anymore to go on with the proposed bout with him. I always remember watching him as a kid...knocking on the front door of some boxers house, calling them out. I forget who it was though.
I think you have that the wrong way around, Collins was chasing a fight with Jones for a long time and he couldn't get it. Collins retired when Calzaghe was coming up to be a challanger to his crown. When Joe won the title Steve was coming back to face him, but collapsed in sparing and doctors told him to call it a day. I think that's the way it happened anyway.
I was pretty young when Collins did a job on Eubank and Benn but people tell me Benn and Eubank were damaged goods by then ? ( Can anyone share some light on this ) As regards to Calzaghe I thought he was Collins mandatory challenger but Collins retired ? So then Calzaghe fought Eubank for the vacant title ? ( Again can anyone share some light on this )
I know Collins wanted to get in the ring with Jones but it never happened. But when he was retired, I heard Jones offered a couple million if Collins came out of retirement and fought him...but had to fight Calzaghe first. Resulting in Collins' collapse like you said, and retirement shortly after.
I have heard jones say in the past that colins turned down a 7 figure purse to fight him, i have however not seen this independently verified and like you say collins was seen as the one doing the chasing at the time
Benn was, Eubank wasn't, definitely not the first fight, may have been in decline for the second. It's usually sour Brits who say that.
I was only young myself...I know Calzaghe was Collins mandatory, but he said he didn't have the motivation or something and retired. Resulting in the Calzaghe Eubank bout.
I don't understand why people say 'oh calzaghe was in another class'. Based on what? Care to follow that up with any points. And there is no chance of Calzaghe stopping him
Collins was a good fighter but pretty easy to find so I think both calzaghe and jones would have been to quick and busy for him so most likely in both cases entertaining ud's
I think that would have been a great, close bout. People probably say Calzaghe was in a different class because the majority see Calzaghe as having the more successful career.
Jones would definitely had beaten him, Calzaghe I would have had as slight favourite had Collins taken him on.
Collins, in his prime, around Eubank\Benn time would have swarmed Calzaghe and given him a very tough fight. Hard to call. Collins in his prime would stop the Jones from the last few years. Collins had excellent stamina, desire to win and was tough.
